Concern grows for missing Church leader

The family of a Church leader and prominent lawyer who went missing over two weeks ago appealed to the government today to help locate him.

Joe Frank Zuniga, 54, president of the United Methodist Church and former head of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, disappeared on June 20.

The family?s lawyer, Harry Roque, said relatives were looking into the possibility that Zuniga was taken by ?agents of the state? in Balanga town, Bataan province.

?He could be the victim of an enforced disappearance,? Roque told ucanews.com.

?We are looking into the possible involvement of state agents because a lot of Church workers are either killed or kidnapped these days,? he added.

Roque, who is also a Methodist, said a number of their members have been accused by the government of having ties with the communist movement.

?If someone with Zuniga?s standing can be abducted, it only means that ordinary individuals are more at risk,? Roque said.

The Zuniga family went to the Department of Justice today to seek assistance from the National Bureau of Investigation.

Charito Zuniga, the missing man?s wife, said the two ?strongest theories? they have right now is that state agents are behind the abduction or the disappearance is a consequence of an ?internal power struggle? in the Methodist Church.
