Romney Sees Pa. Win Despite Polls, Ad Spend

WAYNE, Pa. - Forget about the polls that show Mitt Romney trailing President Obama in Pennsylvania by more than 10 points, and never mind the fact that the Romney campaign has spent virtually no money in the state. The Republican candidate remains convinced he can still win the state in November.

"I've got a little secret here and that is the Obama campaign thinks that Pennsylvania is in their pocket, they don't need to worry about it," Romney said during a rally at the Valley Forge Military Academy this afternoon.

As the crowd erupted in "boos" and "no ways!" Romney responded, "And you're right, and they're wrong."

"We're going to win Pennsylvania and we're going to take back the White House!" he said.

In his speech today, Romney referred himself as the "president future," discussing military cuts and job losses, tailoring his stump speech to Pennsylvania residents. "Let me note, not coincidentally, that someone has calculated how many jobs will be lost in Pennsylvania if those trillion dollars in cuts go through, it's 39,000 jobs," said Romney, in talking about proposed defense cuts. "We can't afford that. So we recognize the consequence of what the president is doing is severe for the people in Pennsylvania it's severe for the entire nation and in fact, because of the world's demand for American leadership, it's severe for the entire world."

The Obama campaign said in response to Romney's remarks that several of his comments were "false" and that "in next week's debate, facts will matter - and Mitt Romney simply failed to meet the bar of honesty today."

Today was Romney's first visit to the state since July 17, and one that comes on the heels of a fundraiser this morning that required the candidate to be in the state. There is no early voting in Pennsylvania, unlike several of the other swing states that Romney has spent more time in as of late, which gives the Romney campaign more time to make up ground. But earlier this week, a Quinnipiac/CBS News/NY Times poll had Obama leading Romney 54 to 42 and the Romney campaign currently has no ads on the air in the state.

At that morning fundraiser, Romney was optimistic, remarking, "I need you to get more people to vote. Because on Nov. 6, I'm going to win Pennsylvania, and I'm going to become the next president of the United States."

"We need every single vote," he said. "You know we really would shock people if early in the evening of Nov. 6 it looked like Pennsylvania was going to come our way and actually did come our way. That could happen. That could happen."

Breast Cancer Survivor Gives Back

?

Breast cancer survivor and Cumberland Foreside resident, Laurie Hyndman, pays it forward.

?We are grateful for Laurie?s energy, enthusiasm, and dedication to the Center,? says Michele Johns, Executive Director of the Cancer Community Center (CCC) of Laurie?s recent appointment to the Center?s Board of Directors and ongoing support of the CCC.

?I walked out of my doctor?s office having just had the diagnosis confirmed. I had breast cancer,? says Hyndman. ?I drove straight to the Cancer Community Center to sit down with my pal, Michele Johns. I hadn?t been there before, but I knew what the center did. Needless to say, I never ever thought I?d need the CCC?s services. Michele armed me with literature about breast cancer, shared the many program offerings that might help me on my journey and, most importantly, offered her love and support. What a difference that can make.

As my family and I navigated the swirling seas of treatment, fear, and hope, we were astonished by the outpouring of concern and support we received from so many people. I was familiar with the Buddy Program and did sense that a lifeline to someone who had been through this herself would help with all of my questions, silly and serious, and would simply understand what I was going through. Turns out I was right and my Buddy was a wonderful source of hope.

There is no good reason to get cancer, but there is a good outcome for so many of us. To be able to give back to another cancer patient, share my experience, offer hope ? that is the greatest reward. The Center gives me so many opportunities to give back and to pay it forward.?

The Maine Buddy Program? is a statewide, one-to-one initiative connecting individuals impacted by cancer with a trained volunteer Buddy who has had a similar cancer experience. The Cancer Community Center finds Buddy matches for cancer patients, caregivers, and those who have lost a loved one to cancer. Buddies are available at any stage of one?s treatment or loss experience. Matches are made using a wide variety of individual criteria including the type of cancer, treatment, age, and geographic location.? Most Buddy relationships take place by phone giving the CCC the ability to accommodate Buddy requests across the state.

?I am struck by the positive feedback we, as board members, hear from CCC buddies and support group participants,? says Michele Johns. ??The Center fields daily calls from people in need and matches them with one of over 200 trained volunteer Buddies or connects them with one of 14 cancer specific support groups.? ?

The Breast & Gynecological Support Group meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday from 6-7:30 pm at the CCC (778 Main St, South Portland). To become a breast cancer Buddy to someone in need or to learn how you can get a Buddy, call 774-2200 or visit the Cancer Community Center website.

?

About the Cancer Community Center

The Cancer Community Center is the place to start when you don?t know where to begin. Since its inception in 1998, the Center has helped thousands of adults coping with the effects of cancer through free support, information and activities. The Center provides a warm, welcoming atmosphere for any adult impacted by cancer, caregivers, friends and family.??

It?s inevitable: When, why, and how Facebook will take on Google in search

Facebook and Google have been on a collision course for years, and their competitiveness has only increased with the release of Google+ just 14 months ago. As the service becomes more and more popular, one has to wonder how Facebook feels about the search giant encroaching on its turf. More importantly, one also has to wonder if Facebook has plans to hit Google back where it hurts.

Yet we already know that Facebook is going to be doing just that. In fact, the social networking giant has already started. Three months ago, Facebook updated the grey text on its search bar from just the word ?Search? to ?Search for people, places and things.?

facebook search 520x34 Its inevitable: When, why, and how Facebook will take on Google in search

Two months ago, Facebook added sponsored ads to its search results. While this is by no means as effective as sponsored results on Google, it?s certainly a start. Companies now have yet another way they can spend their ad dollars on Facebook.

This past week, Facebook added searches to its Activity Log. It?s the only type of activity in there that is being added before it can even be shared. Facebook is all about adding social layers to everything on the Internet, and the move suggests the social networking giant may one day let you share your searches with your friends.

Furthermore, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is no longer denying the company?s interest in search. At TechCrunch?s Disrupt conference, he was asked about many things, and search was one that he didn?t make an effort to deflect. Here?s my transcription of his answer regarding search:

You know, search is interesting. We do on the order of a billion queries a day already, and we?re basically not even trying. Right, so I mean today the vast majority of search is people trying to find people but there are also a meaningful portion of queries trying to find Pages, Brand Pages, other Business Pages, and apps. There?s a bunch of it that actually does kinda link to commercial behavior. I think there is a big opportunity there and at some point we just need to just go do that.

But you know search is interesting. It?s going in this interesting direction. The legacy around search is you get these search engines like Google and Bing and what Yahoo was doing before. You basically type in keywords and the search engine runs some magic to tell you what it thinks the answer is that matches your keyword. But I think search engines are really evolving towards giving you a set of answers. It?s not just like ?here, type in something and show me some relevant stuff.? It?s ?I have a specific question, answer this question for me.?

When you think about it from that perspective, Facebook is pretty uniquely positioned to answer a lot of the questions people have. What sushi restaurants have my friends gone to in New York in the past six months and Liked? Which of my friends, or friends of friends, work at a company that I?m interested in working at because I want to talk to them about what it?s going to be like to work there.

These are queries that you could potentially do at Facebook if we built out this system that you just couldn?t do anywhere else. And at some point we?ll do it. I do think that?s one kinda obvious thing that would be interesting for us to do in the future if we got to a state where we were excited about it.

As you can see, Zuckerberg says multiple times that search is on his bucket list. He covers the who, the what, and of course the where. Now let?s look at the when, the why, and the how.

When?

I doubt we?ll see anything major show up this year. In fact, I wouldn?t be surprised if there?s no huge search launch next year either.

Zuckerberg is in for the long-haul, and while search is definitely something he?s interested in, I think there are many other areas he wants to tackle first. Getting multiple solid revenue streams down is of course important, but as he has said many times, mobile is his number one priority. That?s why we?re seeing the new schedule for updating apps.

Search is definitely coming. Yet there?s no specific answer to the when question, and here?s why (and how).

Why?

It?s the future. Aside from the ?If Google is going to attack us in social, then we?ll attack it in search? argument, I have to agree with Zuckerberg in that social search is where search is headed.

Of course I doubt search engines will ever be replaced by social networks, but the latter will certainly eat into the former. As Zuckerberg muses, the whole point of search engines is to give you answers, and there are many questions that your friends can respond to better than an algorithm.

Therefore, if you can get an algorithm to answer questions based on what your friends say, share, and Like, then you?ll create something worthwhile. If you can create something worthwhile, chances are there?s a way to monetize it.

How?

I think Facebook will be tackling search in many, many stages. There will be days when there are larger announcements than others, but so far it looks like the company will be adding features as they see fit, testing them to see how they?re used, tweaking them accordingly, possibly killing those that don?t work, and then repeating the cycle with the next search feature. This is just how Facebook operates, and I don?t think it will be changing that for search.

There won?t ever be a FacebookSearch.com that you?ll be required to go to. There will just be more and more search functionality added to Facebook.com, as well as features that have nothing to do with search, but that result in you no longer having to search for something.

If I can get in touch with a company via Facebook, then why would I ever need to Google their website? If I can learn everything that I need to know about Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook, then why would I bother to Google him? If I can find a great restaurant to eat at, based on my Facebook friend recommendations, then why would I bother to Google for one?

What experience do you have interpreting and applying written policies, procedures, laws and regulations?

Describe a time when you had to alter a plan because something unexpected occurred. What changes did you have to make to accommodate the situation?

Describe the techniques you use to maintain high productivity in your current or previous job?

This is a supplemental questionnaire the state department is asking for. Help out a fellow clutchfan. My prior experience is mostly sales and IT. I only ask because i know some of you are much better than I am at technical writing.

No one can answer those questions for you. Maybe you should first type a response to each question and post them. That would make it a lot easier for someone to help.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I didn't want to start a new one. I have an offer from a company and it's the first mention of salary... Do you always try to negotiate a higher base pay? They offer the typical 401k matching, health insurance, etc... Thanks!

Depends on your experience, the job, the job market, the company, etc.

If you do not have experience, you don't really have much of a bargaining chip, especially if there are others who have applied for your position in this economy. There are exceptions to this of course, such as prestigious degree, shortage of people with your expertise etc.

You might consider negotiating your vacation time if they are not willing to move on your salary.

Good luck.

Let me wing it:

What experience do you have interpreting and applying written policies, procedures, laws and regulations?

This is one aspect of my job so I have some experience at reviewing and commenting at laws (including the bills), procedures, regulations, policies etc.

Describe a time when you had to alter a plan because something unexpected occurred. What changes did you have to make to accommodate the situation?

Without providing you the specifics, as a part of our legal team, when a plan did not go as I expected it to, I convened one of our meetings to discuss the situation (as endorsed by our head legal officer). Together with my team, we formulated various steps that could be taken as well as the various drawbacks if ever such steps were taken.

When you make a decision, it is not always full proof. There will be some negative impacts a long the way. It is better to know them before hand. Also, although it is difficult, you should be ready for the unexpected. They keywords are always prepare. Not just prepare. Always prepare. You can slack off sometimes but be ready just in case.

Note: I am the one who slacks off when we're doing very little or nothing at work .

Describe the techniques you use to maintain high productivity in your current or previous job?

My team has internal deadlines before the actual deadlines for us to review the reports and for ample time to modify such reports.

Note: If the reports are total BS, it's time for the sleepless nights once again .

Tips:

When you cannot relate to the questions specifically, turn them into general statements and answer them in a general sense. The second and third questions can be answered in a general sense whether you work in the IT field, engineering, finance, etc.

You can paraphrase my answers but it should be believably coming from you and your field of expertise. Would you believe at first construction tips from a surgeon? I think not. Do not apply for a job that you cannot do competently (except if the salary is that good ). You can copy exactly my answers but I guarantee that you will not be convincing any scrutinizing employer any time soon.

I hope this helps. Time to eat

As for the rest of you i am thoroughly disappointed. To be a little more specific I am applying for a Business Tax Representative position with the state of CA. Obviously my experience in sales and such does not allow me to answer these questions thoroughly and in the way i feel will give me a chance for the job so i was hoping for some help. Tough times calls for desperate measures.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_O'Leary

George O'Leary

In 2001, O'Leary left Georgia Tech to take over as the head coach for the University of Notre Dame. A few days after he was hired, inaccuracies were discovered in his published biographical sketch. In the biographical sketch, it stated that O'Leary had earned a master's degree from "NYU-Stony Brook University," a non-existent institution and actually two separate institutions over 50 miles apart.[9] In fact, he had taken only two courses at SUNY - Stony Brook, and never graduated.[10] He also claimed that he had earned three letters in football at the University of New Hampshire, when the school claimed he had not even played in one game.

O'Leary said in a statement released that day, "Due to a selfish and thoughtless act many years ago, I have personally embarrassed Notre Dame, its alumni and fans."[11]

O'Leary blamed the inaccuracies on "resume padding" that had followed him through his career, admitting: "In seeking employment I prepared a resume that contained inaccuracies regarding my completion of course work for a master's degree and also my level of participation in football at my alma mater. These misstatements were never stricken from my resume or biographical sketch in later years."

The questions they asked were general enough that anyone who has ever worked should have been able to answer them. Assume the only job you ever had was at McDonalds:

What experience do you have interpreting and applying written policies, procedures, laws and regulations?

In my job I am required to follow all company policies and procedures as documented. This involves a regular review as well as undertanding new techniques, especially as it relates to changing menus and equipment. I regularly reference the large menu boards behind me when processing orders.

Describe a time when you had to alter a plan because something unexpected occurred. What changes did you have to make to accommodate the situation?

Generally when someone orders a large coffee, it is relatively simple to retrieve a cup, fill it, accept payment and move to the next customer. One day, Biff dropped all of the availble large cups into the deep fryer. A new shipment wasn't expected for an hour or two. Until that time, whenever someone ordered a large cup, I gave them two regular cups instead.

Describe the techniques you use to maintain high productivity in your current or previous job?

I attempt to memorize the big menu board. I am able to maintain eye contact with the customer and engage them in conversation while entering their order on the computer terminal. I wear a hairnet. I smear a dab of icy hot under my nose when cleaning the bathroom. Rather than think of ways my current job applies to these questions, I ask a bunch of random strangers to answer them for me and then modify their answers to suit my job.

Tools to Help Kids Express Emotions | Apartment Therapy

Expressing emotions is already hard as an adult, I can't imagine (or don't remember) how hard it must be as a child. In that spirit, I'm trying to help my kids express and accept whatever emotions come up, especially when it comes to negative emotions such as anger and sadness.

The truth is, it's really hard to explain the notion of emotion to a child. Much less ask them to tell you which one they feel. However hard it is, though, research shows self-compassion is of utmost importance, beyond even self-esteem.

There are a few different options out there that can help, mostly games, but also books, apps, and dolls.

? Robot emotions flashcards at Mr. Printable.
? The emotional animals dice game, an active game for younger ones.
? The chill & spill journal, more of a pre-teen and teen item.
? A coloring/make your own story book.
? The emotion matching game, a how-to make your own photo to word matching game.
? Today, I feel silly, a book by Jamie Lee Curtis.
? Touch and learn emotions, a mobile app.
? Emotions memory, a French and English bilingual game.
? Funny families, another bilingual (French/English) card game based on the seven families game.
? Kimochi dolls.

Victim 1 in Jerry Sandusky trial has book deal

NEW YORK (AP) ? A key witness against convicted child molester and former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, known in court papers as Victim 1, has a book deal and will soon reveal his identity, a publisher announced Thursday.

Ballantine Bantam Dell said that "Silent No More: Victim (hash)1's Fight for Justice Against Jerry Sandusky," is coming out Oct. 23. The memoir will be co-written by the victim's mother and psychologist and "will share how he survived years of shame and secrecy, harassment and accusation, before reporting Sandusky's actions to the authorities, and will offer a hopeful and inspiring message for victims of abuse," Ballantine announced.

Victim 1, now 18, will reveal his identity on the day of the book's release in an interview with ABC's Chris Cuomo.

Financial terms for the book were not disclosed. But Ballantine, an imprint of Random House Inc., plans a donation to a charity for victims of child abuse.

Victim 1 first alerted authorities in 2008 and helped launch the investigation leading to Sandusky's conviction in June on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. Prosecutors said some of the assaults took place on the Penn State campus. Sandusky is scheduled to be sentenced next month and is likely to receive a sentence that will keep him in prison for life.

Victim 1 testified for the prosecution that Sandusky approached him through a summer camp for youth sponsored by The Second Mile, a charity for at-risk youth that the former coach had founded. Their initial contacts consisted of football games and swimming, and Sandusky would attend the boy's wrestling tournaments.

Physical contact began with a hand on his leg in the car, Victim 1 said, and he began spending nights at the Sandusky home in State College, about 30 miles from his own home in Lock Haven.

Kissing and back rubbing during those overnight visits, when he was in his early teens, progressed to oral sex, he testified, sobbing. He said Sandusky eventually told him: "It's your turn."

"I don't how to explain it, I froze," he said. "My mind is telling me to move but I couldn't do it, I couldn't move."

He told jurors his own behavior worsened, going from a well-behaved child to fights with relatives and bed wetting. His grades deteriorated. After Victim 1 began trying to avoid Sandusky, he asked his mother about websites for child molesters, "to see if Jerry was on there," he testified.

His mother set up a meeting with school guidance counselors, a process that led to the opening of a police investigation and produced criminal charges against Sandusky in November. Messages seeking comment left Thursday for Victim 1's civil lawyers, Slade McLaughlin and Michael Boni, were not immediately returned.

Voter registration problems widening in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) ? What first appeared to be an isolated problem in one Florida county has now spread statewide, with election officials in at least seven counties informing prosecutors or state election officials about questionable voter registration forms filled out on behalf of the Republican Party of Florida.

State Republican officials already have fired the vendor it had hired to register voters, and on Thursday took the additional step of filing an election fraud complaint against the company, Strategic Allied Consulting, with state officials.

A spokesman for Florida's GOP said the matter was being treated very seriously.

"We are doing what we can to find out how broad the scope is," said Brian Burgess, the spokesman.

Florida is the battleground state where past election problems led to the chaotic recount that followed the 2000 presidential election.

The Florida state party has paid Strategic Allied Consulting more than $1.3 million, and the Republican National Committee used the group for nearly $3 million of work in Nevada, North Carolina, Colorado and Virginia.

The company said earlier this week that it was cooperating with elections officials in Florida. It said the suspect forms were turned in by one person, who has been fired.

"Strategic has a zero-tolerance policy for breaking the law," Fred Petti, a company attorney, said Thursday.

An email request to the company seeking additional comment, following the company's instructions, was not immediately returned Friday.

In Florida, it is a third-degree felony to "willfully submit" any false voter registration information, a crime punishable by up to five years in prison.

The questionable forms have showed up in South Florida, including Miami-Dade, as well as northeast Florida and the Florida Panhandle.

Election officials in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties on Thursday handed over more than 100 suspect forms to local prosecutors. They did so days after officials in Palm Beach County also alerted prosecutors.

Ann Bodenstein, the elections supervisor for Santa Rosa County, said her staff started raising questions after an employee saw a form that changed the home address of a neighbor.

Paul Lux, election supervisor for Okaloosa County, said questionable forms in the Florida Panhandle appear to have all come from Strategic's effort based at the local Republican Party headquarters. He said his office has turned up dozens of suspect forms.

Lux said there have been forms that listed dead people and were either incomplete or illegible. He met with local prosecutors on Friday, but added that his staff was still going through hundreds of forms dropped off by Strategic employees.

Lux, who is a Republican, said he warned local party officials earlier this month when he first learned the company was paying people to register voters.

"I told them 'This is not going to end well,'" Lux said.

But Lux added that he did not blame the Republican Party of Florida.

"I can't place the blame on RPOF if they hired a firm and that firm wasn't following the rules they were given to follow," Lux said.

Lux also heard a complaint from the head of the local chapter of the League of Women Voters, who raised questions about Strategic employees.

Mary Blackwell said the league's Okaloosa County chapter held a voter registration drive at a college campus in Niceville and that a person who was registering voters told her he was "lucky" he only had applications from Republicans or independents. Blackwell said she was "distressed" by the comments and became worried that he may be discarding voter registration forms filled out by Democrats.

The state party filed the complaint against Strategic Allied Consulting with state election officials, who can refer the case to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement if it is found legally sufficient.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? For presidential candidates, the debates that start next Wednesday carry the risk of creating a memorable moment they'd rather forget.

Campaigns watch for awkward words or an embarrassing image that can become shorthand for the other guy's flaws. This year's three debates are unscripted, live events expected to draw tens of millions of viewers. So they're a perfect incubator for a moment that could newly define President Barack Obama or challenger Mitt Romney.

Tad Devine was an adviser to Al Gore's presidential campaign and remembers how Republicans capitalized on Gore's sighs during one debate. Devine says defining moments are cemented in voters' minds by replays on TV and the Internet and maybe even a "Saturday Night Live" skit.
