News in Brief: Body and Brain

Good touch, bad touch
A leg caress can delight or feel totally skeevy, depending on who?s doing the caressing. A touch?s emotional baggage can be seen in the brain?s initial response to that touch, scientists report in the June 19 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Heterosexual men?s somatosensory cortices, brain regions that detect a touch?s basic attributes, responded differently when a touch was thought to come from a gorgeous woman in a black evening dress or a masculine man in a black tank top. Emotions are incorporated into touch sensation surprisingly early in the sensory process, the study shows.

Brain zap helps an aging memory, if you?re educated
Brain jolts improve working memory in older adults, but only in those who are highly educated. With age comes a growing number of working memory failures, such as walking into the kitchen and forgetting why. After a session of transcranial direct current stimulation, working memory improved for highly educated participants (schooled for 16.9 years on average). People with lower education levels (13.5 years) saw no benefit or grew worse. The results may reflect people using different strategies to solve problems, Marian Berryhill and Kevin Jones of the University of Nevada, Reno write in an upcoming Neuroscience Letters.

High-risk Alzheimer?s gene variant poses greater threat to women
A well-known risk factor for Alzheimer?s is particularly dangerous for older women even if they are healthy and sharp, researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine and colleagues report in the June 13 Journal of Neuroscience. Women with one copy of the e4 version of the ApoE gene had abnormal activity in key brain regions and elevated levels of the Alzheimer?s-related tau protein in spinal cord fluid compared with women who lacked that version of the gene. Men with one copy of e4 were less affected in those respects. The results may help explain why women are more susceptible to Alzheimer?s.

Home Loans and Government Help | Moneyhacker

uying a home for the first time can seem like a foreboding endeavor thanks to the often unstable state of the housing market. Thankfully, the United States Government offers several alternatives to private and conventional loans that make buying a home a real possibility for ordinary people. In this article I?ll list four different programs, the ways they work and their limitations. I?ll also provide links that provide even more information about each of these programs.

The FHA (Federal Housing Administration), is part of the HUD (US Department of Housing and Urban Development) and has been active since 1934. In a nutshell, FHA loans offer relatively low down payments, easy credit qualification and low closing costs. In fact, the down payment can sometimes be as low as 3.5% of the home?s total purchase price, and the loan can include the price of closing costs and other fees. The cost of fixing up an existing home can be included in the loan, and the loan can also be used to make a home energy efficient (via an FHA Energy-Efficient Mortgage). In addition to this, an FHA loan can be used to purchase a mobile home or manufactured housing. Due to the all-inclusive nature of FHA loans, they are often ideal for first time home owners. For more information, the

is a valuable resource.

VA Loans

For veterans of the armed services (including some Guard and Reservist members), a VA loan is often a wise and convenient choice. Qualified buyers can purchase a home with no down payment, no mortgage insurance premiums, receive a property value appraisal and enjoy low, fixed closing costs. In addition, a 1-year warranty on all homes is demanded from the builder in most cases. VA also offers loan and financial counseling to veterans. There?s no maximum VA loan, but most lenders cap the amount at $417,000. Prospective buyers must meet certain income and credit qualifications, and there are several clauses that make building a new home using a VA loan difficult. It also must be said that not all lending institutions are VA-approved. For more information about VA loans, Military.com provides a wealth of information.

RHS Loans

The Rural Housing Service falls under the USDA (US Department of Agriculture) and provides both direct loans and guaranteed mortgage loans. In some specific cases, the RHS offers people in rural locations a direct loan based on their income and their ineligibility for other types of loans. In most cases, however, the RHS provides a guarantee on a loan issued by a traditional lender. The RHS will repay the lender if the buyer defaults on a loan, and also helps many people who would not otherwise be approved for a loan obtain financial assistance. People with poor credit and low income are much more likely to receive a loan with the RHS, a division of the USDA, supporting their request. As long as the buyer makes less than 115% of the medium income in his/her area, they qualify for no down payment and other benefits. The loan can be used to purchase (and fix up!) existing property or to buy a new home. Buyers must live in a rural area, meet very specific income requirements and, in most cases, have a good credit rating. For more information about RHS loans, visit the USDA.

Section 184

Section 184 is the go-to program for Native Americans to purchase property on Tribal land. A buyer must be a member of a federally recognized tribe to qualify for Section 184. Created in 1992, the program makes a guarantee to private lenders so they can provide loans for those living on Tribal lands. If a home is on Tribal Trust Land, the buyer works with the BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) and HUD to turn the property into a leased entity for the duration of the mortgage + 10 years. This means that if the buyer forecloses, the lender purchases the lease and not the Tribal land itself. If the buyer already owns Trust land, there is no need for a leasehold estate. To qualify for Section 184, land does not need to be Trust land, it just needs to be located on a Native American or Native Alaskan estate. Lending limits are based on the current market and not on a buyer?s credit rating.

With one of these programs standing behind them, any prospective home buyer should have the confidence they need to purchase a home without endangering their financial future. In any case, research, shopping around and asking as many questions as possible are the best resource to ensure long term stability.

Union Woodshop owners to open restaurant in Fenton fire hall

It's official. The City of Fenton Downtown Development Authority selected Union Joints (owners of Clarkston Union, Union Woodshop, Union General Store and Union Adworks) to open a restaurant in Fenton's old fire hall.

Other contenders for the spot were Lockhart's BBQ, Arbor Brewing Company and Tavern 131/Ciao Amici. The DDA narrowed it down to Clarkston Union and Arbor Brewing Company last week. The location has been vacant for a few years, and the city decided its best use would be as a restaurant.

Union Joints will keep the name Fenton Fire Hall, according to its proposal, and expects to open the restaurant in about eight months.

Owners Curt Catallo and his wife, Ann Stevenson, who recently opened the Vinsetta Garage in Berkley with partner KC Crain, vice president of Autoweek magazine, said in an e-mail, "We're wildly excited about this opportunity. Ann and I have always dug that building and preserving it as a restaurant is right up our alley!"

Plans are for indoor and outdoor seating, an open-pit kitchen and 60-tap biergarten. Catallo and Stevenson created the website www.fentonfirehouse.com so the community can follow the changes. The design fits into the couple's mantra of not straying from what was originally housed in buildings that they transform into restaurants. "The Fenton Fire Hall should be kept true to the building's original purpose," the restaurant proposal said. "We propose a joint that respects both the flame and the ability to douse it."

The building is on the corner of South Leroy and Ellen streets.

96% First Position

All Critics (50) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (48) | Rotten (2)

A number of the performances are plain stunning - Aran and Joan, in particular, seem born to move - and in many ways watching the movie is like watching a sporting event; there are winners and losers and favorites to cheer on.

It's an intense journey, and Kargman captures it all, down to the dancers' bloodied and bruised feet.

Yes, it is possible to create a gripping documentary about the ballet world without resorting to "Black Swan" melodramatics.

Because its subjects are so driven and so talented, "First Position," which is about ballet, is more gripping than the norm.

It's in the quick audience-reaction shots of the young dancers' exultant parents and cringing private instructors that the movie finds its most nakedly human moments.

The film shows the grueling work it takes for young dancers like Zamora to look effortless on stage, and First Position shows teachers who range from supportive to borderline abusive.

Far from the dutiful progeny of "Dance Moms," these are individuals of uncommon skill, self-knowledge, maturity and drive. They're the real deal. And so is First Position.

All of the dollars and expertise that produced this summer's blockbusters could never produce a spectacle as wondrous as 11-year-old Aran Bell dancing his heart out.

Kargman ... brings a welcome empathy to this programmatic film that follows six hopefuls as they compete in something called the Youth America Grand Prix, which we're told is the most comprehensive ballet competition in the world.

The children are almost unearthly in their agility and elegance -- until they remove their shoes, and reveal their all-too-human abrasions and injuries.

It's a wealth of material at odds with a scant running time and shallow focus.

When it's over, you won't remember so much about who won and who lost. Instead, what remains is the expression on a young dancer's face, reflected in a mirror: showing the joy of being in love with what you do.

What we experience is the overwhelming thrill of the competition and the true agony of defeat.

It could very well compete for Best Documentary at next year's Academy Awards.

For someone (like me) who has never been to a ballet, the talent of these teens and tweens is a revelation.

It's 'Spartacus' en pointe.

Inspiring documentary about hardworking young dancers.

Almost loses its sense of good taste entirely in the final act, straining to build suspense and shape heroes. The bias hangs a little ugly in an otherwise passable, somewhat enlightening effort.

The cookie cutter format Kargman uses in presenting her subjects may be unoriginal but a safe way to introduce the filmmaker to her new audience.

Child ballet dancer and former journalist Bess Kargman brings a dancer's passion and insight to her directorial debut, illuminating the addictive magic and fierce demands of a ballet dancer's life.

Really, all of the dancers' evident passion for their art is, well, spellbinding.

These kids are proud of their tights.

Ford Focus EcoBoost 1.0L Review

With the proliferation of its EcoBoost technology and an ongoing battle to be a leader in the fuel economy segment one can?t help but wonder how small of an engine Ford will be willing to offer in its North American lineup.

FAST FACTS

1. Ford EcoBoost 1.0L 3-cylinder was recently named International Engine of the Year

2. Fuel Economy is rated at as high as 49 mpg.

3. Set to arrive on our shores, we're likely to see the EcoBoost 1.0L in the Focus and Fiesta.

At present, the answer seems to be a 1.0-liter three-cylinder, incorporating direct injection and turbocharging. Developed by Ford?s U.K. technical center in Dunton, Essex, this engine was conceived primarily for powering Ford?s smaller volume vehicles in Europe, namely the Fiesta, Focus and its B-Max and C-Max derivatives.

This week in Dearborn, Ford reaffirmed plans that the EcoBoost 1.0 is definitely coming to North America, though declined to say exactly when (sometime next year was the best we could get), or which cars in its lineup will offer it.

Nevertheless, AutoGuide was given a chance to sample the motor in a Euro-spec Focus at the Dearborn Proving Grounds.

TWO POWER OUTPUTS

?

In Europe, the Ecoboost 1.0 is currently offered in two versions: one that develops 98 horsepower and the other, 123 horsepower. Availability is currently restricted to the Focus, though Ford says it will be offered in the B-Max and C-Max later this year.

Features of this engine, which is about the size of an A4 sheet of paper, include a low inertia turbocharger, designed to spin at low rpm for better throttle response, while an exhaust manifold cast into the cylinder head has been designed to lower exhaust temperatures and therefore optimize air/fuel ratios across a wider rpm spread.

?

2013 Ford Focus EcoBoost 10 engine

?

In addition, in order to maximize efficiency and fuel economy the engine uses a cast-iron instead of aluminum block. The idea is to promote faster warm up, reducing the need for more fuel when cold, thus boosting gas mileage and lowering emissions.

In Europe, the 98-horsepower engine is rated at 4.8-liters per 100 km (49 mpg US), while the 123 hp version is said to deliver 5.0 liters per 100 km (47 mpg US). We should point out, however, that those numbers are based on the less strict European test cycle and should drop by as much as 20 percent once US EPA testing is done. CO2 emissions output is rated at 109 grams per kilometer and 114 g/km respectively.

2013 Ford Focus EcoBoost 10 work

Because three-cylinder engines are inherently unbalanced and in the past, often incredibly coarse under load (just ask anybody who?s ever driven a Geo Metro), Ford has decided to tackle this issue by installing an unbalanced flywheel, in an effort to improve smoothness without the need to install power robbing balance shafts.

The question is, does it work?? Well, during our fairly brief stint driving the car on the track, two things readily became apparent. Firstly, for such a small engine the EcoBoost 1.0 delivers a healthy wallop of torque at low rpm.

Secondly, it feels and sounds very much like a small diesel engine, even though it runs on gasoline. In our six-speed manual test Focus we had no problem accelerating out of corners and traversing hills and dips on the test route. Usually, in a car of this size with a gas engine this small, the thing would have trouble getting out of its own way, yet the EcoBoost 1.0 was responsive, peppy even.

Although not as smooth as its larger 1.6 and 2.0-liter four-cylinder counterparts, it?s far removed from the likes of that nasty old Suzuki unit found in the Geo Metro and is without doubt, an overachiever of an engine. And, like other EcoBoost motors, it?s designed to run on regular grade fuel.?

WHAT WILL WE GET IT IN?

?

2013 Ford Focus EcoBoost side

?

At this point it?s difficult to say, though we?ll interpret small cars to mean likely the Focus and possibly the Fiesta too. If and when that does happen, Ford will likely list it as an option on the Focus rather than the standard engine, in keeping with practice on other models such as the Taurus and F-150. That way, consumers will have a chance to warm to it, since after all, the idea of a three-cylinder engine in a regular passenger car is still alien to most Americans.

As to any changes we can expect from the European version, engineers we talked in Dearborn this week said they would be minimal, restricted to minor spark calibrations and ECU settings.?

THE VERDICT

?

Expecting to be underwhelmed, the Ford's new 1.0L EcoBoost engine surprises with power and is a reassuring sign that the return of the 3-cylinder engine won't spell a new era of outrageously underpowered cars. Perfectly suitable in terms of power for the Focus, it's certain to be an even better match in the Fiesta. There's still more to be done in the area of refinement, while perhaps the biggest potential drawback will be Ford's strategy of pricing its EcoBoost offerings above the conventional gasoline ones, meaning those interested in this ultra efficient gasoline engine have to settle for its diesel-like characteristics.

21 EBay Inventory Management and Online Selling Tools ? SMB ...

In the fourth quarter of 2011, eBay Marketplaces reported 100 million active users worldwide. According to eBay on its marketplace a woman?s dress sells every 8 seconds and someone buys a cell phone every 5 seconds. ?

EBay is still a very popular buying and selling platform and used by many different types of sellers ? SOHO ecommerce owners, part-time eBay enthusiasts and large businesses. Different sellers need different eBay tools.? While eBay offers its own listing tools, you may find ? like many other people do ? that eBay?s tools don?t provide the listing features you need; for example, listing your inventory across multiple auctions sites in addition to your own Web store.

Many of the inventory management and multiple-channel selling tools for eBay sellers we list below offer a free trial, so you can try different eBay tools to see which ones best suit your business needs before you make a cash investment.

Even if you sell on eBay and make a profit, many sellers prefer to manage their own off-eBay Web store and list the same products on other sites such as Amazon or eBay alternative sites.? The problem is that manually tracking sales across multiple channels and removing products from one online listing when it sells elsewhere is not a good business strategy.

Inventory management and multi-channel ecommerce software can help you to create your own online store if you don?t have one and synchronize your inventory and stock levels across all the places you do business. Here are 13 options to help you better manage a multiple channel selling strategy for eBay.

1.? AuctionBlox eMarketConnect provides access to eBay and Amazon.com from your existing online store. By connecting your store with eBay, AuctionBlox allows you to list your products on eBay and to process checkout in your own store. CRE Loaded, oscommerce, Zen Cart and Magento art software is supported. ?AuctionBlox Storefront pricing starts at $99/month.

2.? AuctionSound is eBay auction-management software that helps sellers manage eBay consignment and online inventory. AuctionSound provides image hosting, eBay templates and consignor-management and reporting tools. Pricing starts at a $24.99/month; free 30-day trial.

3. BigCommerce lets you create your own Web shop, plus you can sell on Facebook and eBay.? Extra features include multi-channel retailing, mobile commerce, SEO, and easy upselling. Pricing starts at a $24.95/month.

4.? ChannelMAX is an inventory-management service that lets you create a Web store plus list your inventory to multiple online marketplaces including eBay, Overstock and uBid. You can schedule listings, create listing templates and more.? Pricing starts at $24.99/month.

Winning bidders will be presented with an add-button via email, and upon successful payment, the cart will update the eBay auction status automatically. Pricing starts at $18/month; free 14-day trial.

6.? Infopia offers SaaS (Software as a Service) ecommerce solutions including a Marketplaces product to build a multi-channel business by optimizing product sales across your own website and online marketplaces like eBay and Amazon. Sellers can manage all online inventory, marketplace listings, and orders from one place.? Contact Infopia for pricing details.

With 310M Active Users, Google Chrome Is Coming To iPad, iPhone

News updates all day from Fast Company.

In March and again in May, Google Chrome briefly surpassed Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox to become the world's most popular browser. While metrics vary as to which browser is truly the market leader, Google is indisputably?nearing the top position if it's not already No. 1: As the company announced today, the Chrome browser now boasts 310 million active users.

The milestone is remarkable given Google's relatively short history in the space. While Microsoft has been battling in the browser wars for decades--and Mozilla for years as well--Google only joined the fight in late 2008, but quickly skyrocketed in popularity. And the company is looking to increase its browser's presence: Not only has the company pushed the platform on its Android and ChromeOS devices, but it unveiled today that the browser would be coming to iPhones and iPads too.

Later today, Google Chrome will supposedly appear in Apple's App Store, giving Apple's Safari browser some much-needed competition. Apple has long lagged behind other browsers in the PC space, but thanks to the dominance of its smartphones and tablets, Safari has become the market leader in mobile browser share. Perhaps that could change with Chrome sneaking into iOS users' homescreens.

In addition to the iOS version of Chrome, Google announced this week that Chrome for Android would be coming out of beta, and also showed off some new features of its Chromebooks, which have the browser at its core. ?

NYK Selects KVH mini-VSAT Broadband for Containerships - All ...

Following extensive onboard tests of maritime communications systems, Tokyo-based Nippon Yusen Kaisha is adding the award-winning TracPhone? V7 satellite communications system from KVH Industries, Inc., to its containerships. The systems will use KVH's global mini-VSAT Broadbandsm service, which is being provided by KVH's partner, SKY Perfect JSAT, in accordance with the OceanBB brand name. NYK's fleet includes containerships, Pure Car Truck Carriers, dry bulk carriers, crude oil tankers, and LNG tankers, more than 100 of which will be equipped with broadband service to support NYK's IBIS project with real-time communications between ships and staff on shore.

Industry leader in other words constantly innovating

"NYK is an industry leader in other words constantly innovating and improving its shipping and logistics operations with the aim of optimizing safety, economy, and protection of the environment," says Brent C. Bruun, KVH's senior vice president of global sales and business development. "Their industry-leading IBIS project, which helps improve the operation of their ships and reduce CO2 emissions, requires delivering real-time weather and sea current forecasts to the ship and automatically sending ship operation data back to shore for ongoing analysis. The improved connectivity provided by our mini-VSAT Broadband service will allow for greater information sharing and collaboration between NYK employees on vessels and shore, increasing both safety and efficiency. It as well provides affordable communications for crew members to communicate with their families or use the Internet."

With more than 2,000 onboard terminals sold, mini-VSAT Broadband is the world's fastest growing, most popular maritime VSAT solution. The network uses ArcLight? spread spectrum innovation, which was developed by KVH's partner, ViaSat, Inc., exactly for mobile use. ArcLight is unequalled due to its efficient reuse of satellite channels, fast speed, low latency, and its ability to support very small antennas that provide reliable service, even in poor weather conditions.

KVH manufactures three onboard antennas for the mini-VSAT Broadband network - the award-winning 24" diameter TracPhone V7, the compact, 14.5" diameter TracPhone V3, which is the world's smallest maritime VSAT antenna, and in the near future, the new dual-mode TracPhone V11, which will provide coverage of 95% of the Earth thanks to its ability to receive both C- and Ku-band satellite signals. The mini-VSAT Broadband service equips vessels with the highest data rates available today with downloads as fast as 4 Mbps and uploads as fast as 1 Mbps, as so then as Voice over IP telephone lines with optimized service and prioritization of applications.

"The market for mini-VSAT Broadband is expanding rapidly in the Asia-Pacific region as leading companies like NYK realize the benefits of onboard broadband. We expect that many major commercial fleets will follow this example, and look forward to working with our local partners to provide outstanding customer support for key solutions just as NYK's IBIS project," added Mr. Bruun. "KVH's combination of affordable commercial-grade service, outstanding global support, and compact hardware offers the perfect solution for diverse fleets like NYK Line."

Work-at-Home Part-Time Jobs for Stay-at-Home Parents

Wireless KeyboardWith the high cost of childcare, more and more parents are making the decision to have one parent stay home to care for the children.? However, this decision is not made lightly as there are usually significant financial repercussions.? We live in a society that is geared toward two incomes, so living on one income can be difficult.

The decision does not have to be all or nothing, though.? With good time management and organizational skills, the stay-at-home parent may find some ways to earn money while caring for his or her own children.

Consider one of these jobs:

  1. Tutor.? If you were previously a teacher or excelled in a subject in college, you may be able to turn your skill into profit.? You can advertise the old-fashioned way by placing an ad or putting up a sign where college and high school students are, or you can go online.? Sites like WyzAnt help connect tutors with those needing academic assistance.? Many of these online tutoring sites let you work from the comfort of your home.
  2. Babysit.? This is a good option if you like caring for children and can watch several at once.? However, you will probably need to go through an inspection to become licensed. ?You may also want to draw up a contract with prospective clients to outline how vacation time will work (will you be paid or not), and if there will be a charge for late pick up, etc.
  3. Before and after school care.? If you don?t want to babysit all day long, you might consider offering before and after school care.? The child will be dropped off to your home before school, and you will likely drive him to school as well as pick him up after school and perhaps help him with homework until the parents pick him up in the evening.
  4. Virtual assistant.? More and more businesses (and even bloggers) are looking to hire virtual assistants.? Your tasks could range from administrative assistant work to accounting.? There are many virtual assistants today performing a variety of tasks.? The best perk of this job is that the schedule is often very flexible, allowing you to work when your child naps or is asleep at night.
  5. Freelance writer.? If you have a flair for writing, you may consider pursuing a freelance writing career.? You could write for magazines or blogs or websites.? There are plenty of websites for writers including Make a Living Writing and Write to Done.

If you have chosen to stay home with your children, you can still find a way to make money.? The key is to find a job you can pursue part-time while your children are small.? Choosing a job that offers a flexible schedule and work that can be done from home is key.? Who knows, you may end up enjoying the job so much that you pursue it full-time when your kids are in school.

Credit Blog Article ? ?When Credit Disputing Doesn't Work ? Take ...

Recently, a victim of identity theft contacted me regarding his frustration in trying to correct his credit reports. The consumer was attempting to purchase a home when his mortgage lender informed him of a significant collection account listed on his credit reports. As a result, his loan approval was in jeopardy pending resolution of the collection account.

The consumer immediately contacted the collection company that furnished the negative credit information to the credit bureaus, to inquire about the collection account listed on his credit reports. The collection company told him they were attempting to collect a $20,000 debt on behalf of a creditor for a defaulted lease agreement for a restaurant he had supposedly owned while living in California. The problem is this consumer never actually owned a restaurant before and never lived or worked in California at any time in his life. He had never even been to California.

He frantically tried to explain to the collection company representative that the information reported was fraudulent and pleaded with them to have the inaccurate information removed from his credit reports.

He was certain they would be understanding of this mistake and quickly fix his credit reports. After all, he had seen all of the Federal Trade Commission public announcements that stated consumers don?t need professional help to fix their credit. He had read about how consumers can easily resolve inaccurate credit items themselves by simply notifying the creditors of the errors and/or file disputes online with the credit bureaus and they would be accommodating and readily fix their credit problem.

However, to his surprise the collection company representative refused to have the fraudulent collection account removed from his credit reports. They also refused to provide him with any documentation regarding the debt they were attempting to collect. In fact, their sole purpose in speaking with him was to gather as much information as possible to aid in their debt collection efforts.

He then proceeded to contact his local police department to file a police report regarding the identity theft. He thought surely this would be a simple task to help get the matter resolved. Unfortunately, he was again mistaken. He was told he could not file a police report because he needed to first prove that he was a victim of identity theft. He was sent from station to station and repeatedly denied the opportunity to file a police report. One officer even told him that he would have to travel to California to file an identity theft report!

And to make matters worse, his mortgage loan officer cautioned him not to file formal credit disputes with the credit bureaus because a disputed collection account could possibly impair a consumer?s ability to qualify for automated underwriting of an FHA mortgage loan.

So at this point the poor consumer was completely stumped. He didn?t know what to do. Fortunately for this particular consumer, his Realtor referred him to our company for help. We guided him thru the maze of filing an identity theft police report and helped him properly document that he was the victim of identity theft.

Armed with the proper documentation, we then contacted the collection company on his behalf and reminded them of their duties regarding compliance with the consumer protection laws. As a result, they agreed to have the fraudulent collection account immediately deleted from his credit reports.

Unfortunately, this is only one of many such tragic stories experienced all too often by consumers everyday. However, considering the fact that identity theft and abuse of credit information have now reached epidemic levels, it?s not surprising. Contrary to popular belief, creditors, collection companies, and the credit bureaus are not necessarily as eager to respond to consumer disputes, regarding identity theft, as one might think. As I have stated on several occasions, the financial interests of the credit bureaus are not necessarily aligned with your interests as a consumer.

However, all is not lost. If you encounter a situation where a creditor, collection company, or credit bureau refuses to correct inaccurate or incomplete credit information listed on your credit reports, you may be able to take legal action. The Fair Credit Reporting Act is one of many laws that protect consumers dealing with inaccurate credit information.

How the FCRA Protects You

There are two basic ways in which the FCRA protects consumers.

  1. The FCRA provides federal and state law enforcement agencies (e.g. the Federal Trade Commission and state attorney general offices) the right to take legal action against any furnisher who provides incomplete or inaccurate information to a credit bureau. This right is provided by 15 U.S.C. Section 1581s-2(a). Under this section, furnishers are obligated to regularly correct and update credit information about consumers and must also notify credit bureaus if a consumer disputes any credit information reported. However, individual consumers cannot use this section of the code in a private action against a furnisher or against a credit bureau.
  2. However, 15 U.S.C. Section 1581s-2(b) provides consumers with a private right of action against both furnishers and credit bureaus. This section basically sites what is supposed to happen once a credit bureau receives a consumer?s notice of dispute regarding the completeness or accuracy of information provided by any person (i.e. any furnisher) to a credit bureau.

How the Credit Dispute Process is supposed to work?

When a credit bureau receives a dispute from a consumer regarding inaccurate credit information, the credit bureau is supposed to send ?all relevant? information regarding the dispute to the creditor that originally provided the credit information to the credit bureau.

For example, if a consumer files a dispute regarding inaccurate information about a Capital One Bank Visa account, the credit bureau is supposed to send the consumer?s dispute and any relevant information provided by the consumer to Capital One Bank.

At this point, Capital One Bank (the furnisher) has 4 duties regarding the dispute:

  1. Conduct an investigation regarding the disputed information;
  2. review all relevant information provided by the credit bureaus;
  3. report the results of its investigation to the credit bureaus;
  4. and if the investigation reveals the information is incomplete or inaccurate, report the results to all of the credit bureaus to which the furnisher furnished the information.

This is all supposed to happen within 30 to 45 days after the consumer notifies the credit bureaus in writing of the dispute.

Now here?s the most important part to note. If the furnisher fails to perform any of these 4 duties, the consumer has a right to take legal action against the furnisher and/or the credit bureaus for causing incomplete or inaccurate information to be reported concerning the consumer, and for allowing such false information to remain on the consumer?s credit reports.

However, in order to take legal action against the furnisher or credit bureaus, it?s important to properly document their failure to comply with the duties imposed by the FCRA.

So when disputing inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated items listed on your credit reports, there are some steps you need to keep in mind.

Steps to Take Regarding False or Inaccurate Credit Information on Your Credit Report

  1. It cannot be overstated or over emphasized that whenever dealing with the credit bureaus or furnishers put everything in writing. Never use the credit bureaus? online dispute process. Send each dispute letter by certified mail. Phone calls will not protect your rights. Although it?s less convenient, take the time to write your dispute letters and send them via certified mail. This will create a document trail for possible litigation later.
  2. Send your dispute letters to all three credit bureaus first. Then send direct dispute letters to the furnishers. Your dispute letters should begin and end with a respectful request to investigate and correct inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated credit information listed on your credit reports. Include any additional documentation necessary to support your dispute. Again, make sure you send all correspondence by certified mail and keep a copy of all documentation for your records.
  3. ?It?s not necessary to be nasty in your correspondence with the credit bureaus or with the furnishers. Always be professional. Keep in mind that every letter you write may eventually be shown to a jury. You and your lawyer may be asking that same jury for a verdict and damages. The language in your letters may be a reflection of who you are. So you want to present your best image in court. If the language is unprofessional, you may be less likely to receive adequate and just compensation for your credit injuries. Conversely, if the judge and the jury believe that you are professional and acted reasonably, you are much more likely to receive an adequate judgment.

Remember, if a credit bureau or furnisher (i.e. creditors or collection companies) fails to properly correct inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated credit information listed on your credit reports, you can take legal action against them. But first make sure you properly document your case. Either do it yourself, or seek professional help to legally improve your credit.

New bank theft software hits three continents - TechSpott - Computer ...

(Reuters) - A new wave of automated hacking of online bank accounts might have stolen $78 million in the past year from customers in Europe, Latin America and the United States, according to researchers who peered into the computers of the hacking gangs.

The groups used recent improvements to two families of existing malicious software, known as Zeus and SpyEye, which lodged on the computers of clients at 60 banks.

While previous versions of the software have proved adept at stealing logon information, the latest variants automate the subsequent transfer of funds to accounts controlled by accomplices.

The findings, to be released on Tuesday by security firms McAfee and Guardian Analytics, confirmed and expanded on research from Japan-based Trend Micro Inc that was first reported last week by Reuters.

"This looks like the beginning of a new technique," said Guardian's Vice President Craig Priess, whose firm specializes in protecting banks.

The software is sophisticated enough to defeat "chip and PIN" and other two-factor authentication and to avoid transferring the entire contents of an account at one time, which can trigger review, according to the study.

Trend Micro said it had seen the automated versions in action in Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy.

Guardian and Intel Corp-owned McAfee said the same technology, while still emerging, had been used by a dozen gangs against consumers and business clients of financial institutions in those countries and Colombia, the Netherlands, and the United States.

"Someone designing this system has insider knowledge as to what the banks are looking for," said Dave Marcus, research director at Mcafee Labs.

Server logs viewed by the researchers saw commands from the fraud rings to transfer a total of $78 million, including $130,000 from one account. The banks may have been able to block some of those transactions, the researchers acknowledged.

Though written and controlled by different groups, SpyEye and Zeus share the ability to be installed on computers that visit malicious websites or legitimate pages that have been compromised by hackers, as well as through tainted links in emails.

The programs already have used a technique called "web injection" to generate new entry fields when victims log on to any number of banks or other sensitive websites. Instead of seeing a bank ask for an account number and password, for example, a victimized user sees requests for both of those and an ATM card number. All that information is sent to the hacker, who signs in and transfers money to an accomplice's account.

Health ruling to end campaign mystery, unleash ads

A view of the Supreme Court in Washington, Wednesday, June 27, 2012. Saving its biggest case for last, the Supreme Court is expected to announce its verdict Thursday on President Barack Obama's health care law. The outcome is likely to be a factor in the presidential campaign and help define John Roberts' legacy as chief justice. But the court's ruling almost certainly will not be the last word on America's tangled efforts to address health care woes. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

(AP) ? Barely four months before the nation votes, one of the biggest factors in the fight for the White House still is a mystery. That will change on Thursday.

The Supreme Court's expected ruling on President Barack Obama's sweeping federal health care law will shape the contours of the presidential campaign through the summer and fall. Both Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney are primed to use the ruling ? whatever it is ? for political gain.

Obama expresses confidence the court will uphold his signature legislative initiative. But he won't be shocked if a conservative majority overturns the most controversial provision, those familiar with his thinking say. Romney aides say the Republican candidate will get a political boost if the court strikes down the measure. But they don't want celebrations that could alienate voters who could lose health care benefits through the decision.

Neither candidate has any direct influence over the decision. The court may uphold the health care law, strike it down or deem the requirement that most Americans carry health insurance unconstitutional while keeping other aspects in place.

The ruling is expected to be followed almost immediately by a barrage of advertisements and fundraising appeals from Democrats and Republicans, with both sides trying to cast the decision in the most advantageous light for its candidate.

Romney, running on a pledge to repeal Obama's overhaul as a costly federal power grab, has focused more than usual on the Supreme Court ruling this week. In campaign appearances in Virginia, New Jersey and New York, he offered supporters and donors a preview of his likely response to the decision.

At a Tuesday evening New Jersey fundraiser, Romney declared that if the Supreme Court lets the law stand, "it will make it very clear to the American people that they must elect someone who will stop it." If the high court overturns the law, "then the first three and a half years of the Obama administration will have been entirely wasted, because that's where he devoted his energy and passion," the Republican said.

Romney's campaign also is running new ads this week in Virginia, North Carolina and Iowa promising he would move to "repeal Obamacare" on his first day in office.

Obama, while recently avoiding mentioning the impending court ruling directly, has vigorously defended the overhaul as critical to the public's health and well-being in his own campaign events this week.

"I think it was the right thing to do. I know it was the right thing to do," he told supporters in Boston.

The White House also published a blog post Wednesday touting the benefits of the overhaul, including free preventive services for people on Medicare and health insurance rebates for nearly 13 million Americans.

Both Obama and Romney were scheduled to be in Washington on Thursday. Romney planned to comment on the ruling during an event on Capitol Hill, and Obama was certain to address the decision as well.

Obama advisers say the Supreme Court showed reasonableness earlier this week in a ruling on an Arizona immigration case, and they see it as a hopeful sign for how the court might rule on health care.

If the court upholds the law, Obama could get an election year gust of wind at his back, with his vision and leadership validated. If the court strikes down the overhaul, the White House would seek to cast the decision as detrimental to millions of Americans by highlighting popular elements of the law that would disappear, such as preventive care and coverage for young adults on a parent's plan.

Romney, who as Massachusetts governor signed a health care law on which the Obama's federal law was modeled, is expected to use the health care law ? or what remains of it ? as a defining issue going forward in the presidential contest, regardless of which way the court's ruling goes.

Aides say that that Romney will hold up the law either as a symbol of Obama's ineffective leadership or as federal overreach that only the Republican can stop.

The campaign has coordinated its response directly with the Republican National Committee and House Republicans, who have agreed not to "spike the ball" ? as one Republican put it ? should the law be struck down. Romney's campaign worries that an over-celebratory tone may turn off voters affected by the decision.

Still, both sides will use it to raise money and motivate supporters. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee issued a fundraising appeal for a "health care rapid response fund," telling supporters in an email Wednesday that however the court rules, "Democrats are in for a tough fight."

A flood of advertisements is also expected from outside groups. The conservative group called Concerned Women for America pre-emptively launched a six-state, $6 million advertising campaign this week claiming Obama's overhaul results in delayed and denied care, as well as skyrocketing costs.

Making Your Karndean Flooring Last a Long Time

Flooring can add beauty to your home. They can come in solid colours or they can take the form of very whimsical designs. They also come in different types, such as carpet, vinyl, tile, and wood. There is also a laminate flooring option for areas in your house that are prone to dampness.

Of course, just having beautiful flooring is not enough. You would have to make sure that it is properly cared for so that guests who might wander in would not think that your home just survived a major disaster. Here are a few suggestions that would help you in maintaining your flooring:

1. Clean it frequently. People have become more engrossed with their work nowadays that they leave things at home in disarray and only get to attend to them when they show signs of disintegration. However, leaving floors unkempt for long periods of time allows dirt and stains to be deeply ingrained that it would take forever to clean them. So, regularly sweeping your floors will definitely help them last longer.

2. Wipe spillage immediately. Spilling is not unheard of. Every so often, someone in your household is going to spill something. Whether it be your baby-who can be forgiven immediately just because they are so cute, or your husband-who you would find harder to forgive because he has left a permanent dent on your Karndean flooring. The point is that it happens and the remedy is simple: mop the mess pronto and do not wait until it leaves an ugly stain that will have you reeling every time you pass by it.

3. Use felt pads on your furniture. It is a known fact that you do move your furniture when you clean, right? The thing about cleaning is that people tend to drag instead of lift. Now, dragging is very harmful to your floor. It can leave unsightly marks that cannot be removed just by scrubbing it off until your fingers bleed. Felt pads were invented to prevent this catastrophe. So, put them underneath the feet of your furniture and rest assured you can breathe easier the next time someone attempts to drag a chair or a child smashes into it while playing.

4. Apply a new coating. This would actually depend on how heavily used your floor would be. But if the time would come that your floor looks like it would need a facelift so that it would still look shiny and new, be generous and tend to its needs.

Now that you are armed with these tips, go ahead and start scrubbing and cleaning for the betterment of your flooring.

Debra Umberson: Texas Professors Respond to New Research on ...

Mark Regnerus claims to have produced the first rigorous scientific evidence showing that same sex families harm children. As a family sociologist at the University of Texas, I am disturbed by his irresponsible and reckless representation of social science research, and furious that he is besmirching my university to lend credibility to his ?findings.?

The recent study by my colleague Mark Regnerus on gay parenting purports to show that young adults with a parent who ever had a same-sex relationship turn out worse than young adults with continuously married heterosexual parents (who are, in addition, biologically related to their children). He calls this latter group the ?gold standard for parenting.?

But in making this claim, he has violated the ?gold standard for research.? Regnerus? study is bad science. Among other errors, he made egregious yet strategic decisions in selecting particular groups for comparison.

His definition of children raised by lesbian mothers and gay fathers is incredibly broad ? anyone whose biological or adopted mother or father had a same-sex relationship that the respondent knew about by age 18. Most of these respondents did not even live with their parent?s same-sex partner; in fact, many did not even live with their gay or lesbian parent at all! Of the 175 adult children Regnerus claims were raised by ?lesbian mothers,? only 40 actually lived with their mother and her same-sex partner for at least three years.

On the other hand, to be included in the ?heterosexual married family? category, respondents had to have parents who were continuously married from the time of their birth to the time of the survey! Anyone whose parents had divorced between the time they left home and when they took the survey (respondents were aged 18 to 39 at the time of the survey) was not included in this so-called ?gold standard.?

By casting his net so widely for children of supposedly gay and lesbian parents, and so narrowly for the children of heterosexual couples, Regnerus practically guaranteed that his study would find that those with so-called gay and lesbian parents would fare worse than those with so-called heterosexual parents. His approach selected for people who had experienced far more stress and far less stability than average for their generation, much of which arguably had little to do with their parent?s sexual orientation. They experienced more parental divorce, remarriage, and adoption (perhaps preceded by foster care). They were also more likely to be nonwhite and less economically privileged.

Regnerus could have compared young adults who lived continuously in exclusively heterosexual households and those who lived continuously with a parent in a same-sex relationship. But he did not, both because his sample of youth from ?gay families? was too small to parse in this fashion and because his sample of youth from heterosexual households of all types would not likely produce many differences from the ?gay parent? group.

While Regnerus has the right to investigate any question, he also has the responsibility to report only robust findings. We are dismayed by the poor quality of this analysis. Regnerus is not an expert in family sociology, nor does he represent the views of other faculty at the University of Texas. I have been conducting research on family relationships, including gay and lesbian relationships, for many years. Yet the first I learned of this study was when it hit the press. Had Regnerus walked down the hall and knocked on my door, I would have been happy to explain that stress and instability harm children in any family context. Love and support help children to thrive and succeed. Pseudo-science that demonizes gay and lesbian families contributes to stress, and is not good for children.

Debra Umberson collaborated with three other prominent family sociologists at the University of Texas, Austin, to assess the scientific merits of Regnerus? research. These colleagues include: Shannon Cavanagh, Associate Professor, University of Texas, Austin; Jennifer Glass, Barbara Bush Professor of Liberal Arts, University of Texas, Austin; and Board Member of the Council on Contemporary Families, Kelly Raley, Professor, University of Texas, Austin and Editor, Journal of Marriage and Family

DC Comics arrive on Nook Tablet, Barnes & Noble lets you watch, zoom the Watchmen

Image

When we initially did our Nook Tablet / Kindle Fire battle royal, the choice between the devices for comics fans largely came down to the preference between the Marvel and DC universes. The lines, however, are blurring. Thanks to today's announcement, Justice League fans should find as much to love in the Nook Tablet and Color as Avengers devotees. DC has brought more than 100 graphic novels to the aforementioned devices and Android tablets running the Nook app. Barnes & Noble also used the opportunity to announce the new Zoom View feature, which lets readers focus on individual panels -- functionality that sounds fairly similar to what Comixology offers in its own popular app. For more information about Crisis on Infinite Nooks, check out the press release after the break.
