How the Social Security Administration missed this one is anyone's guess, but the Houston Chronicle reports that Kline Fisher Budd, 80, supposedly bankrolled $231,000.
The story goes that Budd shared a joint account with his mother, Willie Mae Shaughnesy and when she passed, the account was left open while the SSA continued to deposit her monthly benefits via direct electronic deposit.?
According to documents released by the Office of the Inspector General in June, the SSA realized something was amiss in December 2010 when Shaughnesy's date of birth "suggested she would have been more than 104-years-old." The state then turned up a death certificate that confirmed her death in November 1984.?
Budd isn't the only senior citizen on the hook for abusing family funds. Last month, a 73-year-old named Edna Sue Pate reportedly gambled away her grandson's entire college fund worth $97,000.?
