In a flashback to the kind of homebuying frenzy not seen since 2008, house hunters have pitched a line of tents in Huntington Beach, Calif., in the hope of buying a brand-new home. Around a dozen pre-qualified homebuyers have literally set up camp by the still-under-construction Brightwater Capri development in Huntington Beach -- and they've already been there for a week.
KCBS in Los Angeles reports that as many as 30 buyers are expected to camp out for the chance to snap up a home at between $800,000 and $900,000. The first home will go on sale March 2, and only five homes will be released this weekend -- and only to pre-approved buyers on a first-come, first-served basis. The interest in the homes may not be particularly surprising, given the details: Each of the yet-to-be-built homes at Brightwater features four spacious bedrooms and boasts ocean views from their second floors. (The development is only half a mile from the beach.) Sizes range from 1,992 to 2,685 square feet, and there are 11 floor plans to choose from.
"If you want the opportunity, you gotta make the sacrifice," Brightwater camper Terry Torline told the TV station. "Based on what's out there in the marketplace, it's a good deal right now." California home prices have been on a dramatic incline lately, while foreclosures in the state have tumbled to an astounding low, according to the Los Angeles Times. And luxury home sales in California reached an all-time high in 2012, with 697 sales each priced at $5 million or more. As another local television station KTLA-TV put it, the campout for homes is just the latest sign that the housing market is again heating up.

When ligaments are loose (ligamentous laxity) it may cause joints to extend beyond the normal range (hypermobility), with studies showing a possible genetic basis. However, when genetic causes are not found and joint pain is present, doctors may use the term 'benign joint hypermobility syndrome.' Several studies have shown that joint pain is common in children with hypermobility, with some reports as high as 74% of children with joint hypermobility experiencing pain. Yet, other research suggests that while musculoskeletal pain is a frequent complaint in adolescents, it is no more common in those with joint hypermobility.
"With such conflicting evidence we set out to determine whether adolescents with joint hypermobility are at risk of developing musculoskeletal pain," explains lead author Professor Jon Tobias from the University of Bristol, UK. In a study funded by Arthritis Research UK, the team recruited participants from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), also known as Children of the 90s. Joint hypermobility was determined at roughly age 14 by a Beighton score of 6 or more out of a possible 9. Individual joints were determined to be hypermobile if, for example, the knees could be bent backwards or the thumbs could touch the wrist. At nearly age 18, participants were evaluated for joint pain by questionnaire.
Analysis of participants with complete data was conducted, with 1267 boys and 1634 girls evaluated. Approximately 5% of participants were hypermobile at age 14, and at age 18 close to 45% of participants reported any pain lasting one or more days. Joint hypermobility was associated with approximately a two-fold increased risk of moderately severe pain at the shoulder, knee, ankle and foot. Interestingly, this increased risk was particularly marked in obese participants, with over a ten-fold increased risk of knee pain observed in obese participants with hypermobility, possibly reflecting the role of mechanical factors.
Professor Tobias concludes, "Our study provides the first prospective evidence that adolescents who display joint hypermobility are at increased risk of developing musculoskeletal pain as they get older, particularly in the shoulder, knee, ankle or feet. Further investigation of increased joint pain in teens is warranted to determine if the long-term effects of joint hypermobility puts them at risk for developing osteoarthritis later in life."

While you all were busy watching, and re-watching, the explosive battle between Sean Hannity and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) last night on Fox?s Hannity, another kerfuffle took place during the show, albeit with a much friendlier ending.
During a debate on NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg?s ?nannying? public health policies, Fox liberal contributor Tamara Holder said that ?most Republicans are fat asses,? and lamented how ?fat Republicans who drive through Wal-Mart in their buggies? are partially responsible for the increased healthcare costs that she believes made ObamaCare necessary.
After introducing the fact that Bloomberg would like to take his ban on large sugary beverages to the statewide level, Hannity took a big ? as Holder called it: ?disgusting? ? bite from a glazed donut. Holder then tried to explain a possible rationale for Bloomberg?s food laws:
?You know why? All Republicans, or most Republicans, are fat asses and get stuck eating these things,? she said.
?You?re calling me a fat ass?? Hannity asked. ?I?ve been called a yellow journalist, immoral, a liar, and now a fat ass. What a night is this?? he joked.
Isn?t it funny that the Republicans, the most conservative Republicans are from the south?? Holder continued. ?And they?re the fattest.?
As Imus producer Bernard McGuirk lit up a cigarette in-studio (yes, this segment quickly went off the rails), Hannity asked to bum one of those as Holder continued to lament overweight conservatives.
Eventually Holder agreed that ?the government shouldn?t regulate [personal decisions] and we?re in control of ourselves,? but, she said, ?what happens is the Republican overeat and they overindulge in everything.?
?And Democrats don?t overeat?? Hannity shot back, still chewing on a donut.
?Why do we have ObamaCare? Because the fat Republicans who drive through Wal-Mart in their buggies,? Holder explained.
?What about the fat Democrats?? Hannity asked. ?There are plenty of fat Democrats.?
Holder challenged Hannity to name names of the non-existent ?fat Democrats.?
Seeing the obvious that yes, overweight Democrats do exist, Holder delivered the quip: ?Well, not this Democrat.?
?Oh, good grief,? Hannity said.

Apple (AAPL) shares got a boost Tuesday afternoon on rumors that the company may announce a split on Wednesday during its annual shareholder meeting. The rumor comes from former money manager and current TheStreet.com contributor?Douglas Kass, who did not disclose his source. ?High above the Alps my Gnome is hearing a rumor that Apple will announce a stock split at tomorrow?s shareholder meeting,? Kass wrote in a post on Twitter, providing no further details. Apple shares rose more than 1.4% on the rumor after nearing a new closing low.
WASHINGTON ? The Pentagon unveiled a plan on Tuesday to ultimately enable the Defense Department's 600,000 users of smartphones, computer tablets and other mobile devices to rapidly share classified and protected data using the latest commercial technologies.
The system aims to quickly enable the latest technologies to be securely used by the military while remaining "device agnostic," said Major General Robert Wheeler, a Defense Department deputy chief information officer.
That sets the stage for an intensified struggle for Pentagon customers among BlackBerry devices, Apple's iPhones or iPads, and units using Google's Android platform .
The Defense Department currently has more than 600,000 mobile device users, including 470,000 with BlackBerries, 41,000 who have Apple operating systems, and 8,700 who use Android devices.
The new plan will result in the use of a much wider variety of mobile devices across the military. Currently most devices using Apple and Google platforms are in pilot or test programs, officials said.
Few commercial devices are used for classified communications, whereas the new system aims to bolster security of commercially available devices so they can be used for classified information, they said.
Wheeler said the implementation plan aimed to ensure that mobile devices, wireless infrastructure and mobile applications remain "reliable, secure and flexible enough to keep up with the fast-changing technologies of today."
He said the department has a broad range of mobile device users, from the chairman and planners on the Joint Chiefs of Staff to policymakers and soldiers on the battlefield, all of whom would be affected by the implementation plan.
The military services would decide which devices to buy and provide to users based on need. The system would not initially enable an individual service member to purchase their own mobile devices and use them on the Pentagon's networks, but that is a longer-range goal if security can be assured, officials said.
The plan is a step toward implementing the "mobility strategy" the Pentagon released last June. The strategy aims to use smartphone, tablet and other mobile technologies to improve information sharing and collaboration across the department.
The plan aims to "align the various mobile devices, pilots and initiatives across the department under common objectives to ensure the war fighter benefits from these activities," Teri Takai, the Pentagon's chief information officer, said in a statement.
"This is not simply about embracing the newest technology ? it is about keeping the department's workforce relevant in an era when information accessibility and cybersecurity play a critical role in missions," she said.
As part of the implementation plan, the department has asked companies to submit proposals for creating a mobile device management platform and an applications store where users can get the programs they need for their devices.
The mobile device management platform would need a number of security features, such detecting malware and enabling officials to remotely delete data from the device, according to documents outlining the plan.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Even if Oscar Pistorius is acquitted of murder, firearms and legal experts in South Africa believe that, by his own account, the star athlete violated basic gun-handling regulations and exposed himself to a homicide charge by shooting into a closed door without knowing who was behind it.
Particularly jarring for firearms instructors and legal experts is that Pistorius testified that he shot at a closed toilet door, fearing but not knowing for certain that a nighttime intruder was on the other side. Instead of an intruder, Pistorius' girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was in the toilet cubicle. Struck by three of four shots that Pistorius fired from a 9 mm pistol, she died within minutes. Prosecutors charged Pistorius with premeditated murder, saying the shooting followed an argument between the two. Pistorius said it was an accident.
South Africa has stringent laws regulating the use of lethal force for self-protection. In order to get a permit to own a firearm, applicants must not only know those rules but must demonstrate proficiency with the weapon and knowledge of its safe handling, making it far tougher to legally own a gun in South Africa than many other countries where a mere background check suffices.
Pistorius took such a competency test for his 9 mm pistol and passed it, according to the South African Police Service's National Firearms Center. Pistorius' license for the 9 mm pistol was issued in September 2010. The Olympic athlete and Paralympic medalist should have known that firing blindly, instead of at a clearly identified target, violates basic gun-handling rules, firearms and legal experts said.
"You can't shoot through a closed door," said Andre Pretorius, president of the Professional Firearm Trainers Council, a regulatory body for South African firearms instructors. "People who own guns and have been through the training, they know that shooting through a door is not going to go through South African law as an accident."
"There is no situation in South Africa that allows a person to shoot at a threat that is not identified," Pretorius added. "Firing multiple shots, it makes it that much worse. ...It could have been a minor ? a 15-year-old kid, a 12-year-old kid ? breaking in to get food."
The Pistorius family, through Arnold Pistorius, uncle of the runner, has said it is confident that the evidence will prove that Steenkamp's death in the predawn hours of Feb. 14 was "a terrible and tragic accident."
In an affidavit to the magistrate who last Friday freed him on bail, Pistorius said he believed an intruder or intruders had gotten into his US$560,000 (?430,000) two-story house, in a guarded and gated community with walls topped by electrified fencing east of the capital, Pretoria, and were inside the toilet cubicle in his bathroom. Believing he and Steenkamp "would be in grave danger" if they came out, "I fired shots at the toilet door" with the pistol that he slept with under his bed, he testified.
Criminal law experts said that even if the prosecution fails to prove premeditated murder, firing several shots through a closed door could bring a conviction for the lesser but still serious charge of culpable homicide, a South African equivalent of manslaughter covering unintentional deaths through negligence.
Johannesburg attorney Martin Hood, who specializes in firearm law, said South African legislation allows gun owners to use lethal force only if they believe they are facing an immediate, serious and direct attack or threat of attack that could either be deadly or cause grievous injury.
According to Pistorius' own sworn statement read in court, he "did not meet those criteria," said Hood, who is also the spokesman for the South African Gun Owners' Association.
"If he fired through a closed door, there was no threat to him. It's as simple as that," he added. "He can't prove an attack on his life ... In my opinion, at the very least, he is guilty of culpable homicide."
The Associated Press emailed a request for comment to Vuma, a South African reputation management firm hired by the Pistorius family to handle media questions about the shooting.
The firm replied: "Due to the legal sensitivities around the matter, we cannot at this stage answer any of your questions as it might have legal implications for a case that still has to be tried in a court of law." Vuma said on Monday it referred the AP's questions to Pistorius' legal team, which by Tuesday had not replied.
Culpable homicide covers unintentional deaths ranging from accidents with no negligence, like a motorist whose brakes fail, killing another road user, "to where it verges on murder or where it almost becomes intentional," said Hood. Sentences ? ranging from fines to prison ? are left to courts to determine and are not set by fixed guidelines.
The tough standards for legally acquiring a gun were instituted in part because of a wave of weapons purchases after the end of racist white rule in 1994, said Rick De Caris, a former legal director in the South African police. Under South Africa's white-minority apartheid regime, gun owners often learned how to handle firearms during military service. Many of the new gun owners had little or no firearms training, which brought tragic results, De Caris said.
"People were literally shooting themselves when cleaning a firearm," said De Caris, who helped draft the Firearms Control Act of 2000.
Prospective gun owners must now take written exams that include questions on the law, have to show they can safely handle and shoot a gun and are required to hit a target the size of a glossy magazine in 10 of 10 shots from seven meters (23 feet), said Pretorius of the Professional Firearm Trainers Council.
In his affidavit, Pistorius said he wasn't wearing his prosthetic limbs "and felt extremely vulnerable" after hearing noise from the toilet.
"I grabbed my 9 mm pistol from underneath my bed. On my way to the bathroom, I screamed words to the effect for him/them to get out of my house and for Reeva to phone the police. It was pitch-dark in the bedroom and I thought Reeva was in bed," he testified.

Chastain makes Maya as vivid as a bloodshot eye. Her porcelain skin, delicate features and feminine attire belie the steel within.
No doubt Zero Dark Thirty serves a function by airing America's dirty laundry about detainee and torture programs, but in its wake, there's a crying need for a compassionate Coming Home to counter its brutal Deer Hunter.
While "Zero Dark Thirty" may offer political and moral arguing points aplenty, as well as vicarious thrills,as a film it's simply too much of a passable thing.
From the very first scenes of Zero Dark Thirty, director Kathryn Bigelow demonstrates why she is such a formidable filmmaker, as adept with human emotion as with visceral, pulse-quickening action.
A timely and important reminder of the agonizing human price of zealotry.
An exhilarating and compelling historical document worthy of praise.
Bigelow's latest proves a rewarding piece of filmmaking, one that, in its best moments at least, is as gripping and as troubling as anything the director's ever made.
Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal shape history -- those breaks, big and small, that led to the killing of Osama bin Laden -- into one of the finest fact-based thrillers since "All the President's Men."
Purely as cinematic exercise, Zero Dark Thirty is an exhilarating piece of work. But, beyond its for-the-times subject matter, the work does not linger whatsoever.
Zero Dark Thirty is interesting as opposed to enjoyable, intriguing as opposed to entertaining, and certainly less memorable than The Hurt Locker.
It's quite remarkable how Bigelow and Boal managed to take 12 years of information (including a conclusion that everyone knows) and packaged it into a coherent, intimate and intense movie.
We know the ending, yet remain mesmerized by familiar details, filmed with a harrowing sense of urgency. It's as close to being in the White House situation room that night, watching a closed-circuit broadcast, as anyone could expect.
The second half of the film IS the film.
Whereas Locker was less about war than what it is to have a death wish, ZDT is less about the suspenseful true-life search for Osama bin Laden than the red tape one woman must wade through to prove that a mean old bastard is living in suburban Pakistan.
Bigelow's great achievement is stripping down the action from the exaggerated theatrics in movies and television shows so the missions feel no less exciting and immediate.
One of the finest movies of the year is a thriller about the tracking and, finally, slaying of Osama bin Laden.
There is no Team America-style, flag-waving bravado behind this story - it is quite the opposite.
Bigelow has created the best film of 2012.
"Zero Dark Thirty" is less a celebration how terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden was found and killed than an engrossing examination of why it took a decade to deal with him.
Following on from the great acclaim of The Hurt Locker, Bigalow's shaky cam and tough talking characters once again take us to the dark side of modern warfare.
In the absence of cinematic grandeur and didacticism, we're left as empty and as lost as Chastain's agent as she boards a symbolically empty plane for an uncertain future. Just what are we to think of the so-called War on Terror?
The viewer needs to stay sharp to stay on top of the details of the labyrinthine search, but Bigelow tackles the complex story with the same muscular urgency and incisive intelligence that won her an Oscar for The Hurt Locker.

After touching a fresh five year high, "the market got very weak very quickly" last week, says Kenny Polcari, director of NYSE floor operations for O'Neil Securities. Stocks not only posted their biggest 1-day percentage decline of 2013, but on a 2-day basis, the midweek retreat was the sharpest in more than 3 months.
Even so, the give back was small, the retreat contained --the S&P 500 fell 0.3% for the week, snapping a 7-week positive streak.
"People are in fact concerned sequestration is going to be at the end of this week. What are we going to do? Are we going over the edge? Is the Fed pulling out? There are still all these issues out there that need to be discussed and that's really going to keep the cap on," says Polcari.
As much as this veteran floor broker sees support at 1490 and is not expecting a full scale sell-off, heavy volume on those two down days has him nervous. "That's what you should be concerned about," Polcari points out, adding that if we break support at 1490, the next real support is in the 1460 area, which would be another 2% down and roughly 4.5% below the recent peak of 1530 hit last week.
At the same time, Polcari predicts that things will likely stall around these levels, until sequestration and Fed policy issues are cleared up - at least a little.
"I am not at all expecting a correction like 10-15%," he says, noting that "there's way too much money out there" to permit that degree of a washout. To that point, if stocks do indeed muster the strength to go higher, Polcari will need to see that big volume come back again.
"You want to see that same increase in volume on up days to send a signal that investors are comfortable taking a shot," he concludes.

THE SEQUESTER GOES LOCAL: Just days remain for Congress to agree to a deficit-reduction deal that would avoid triggering the $85 billion package of automatic cuts that would be split among the federal government over seven months, half from the Defense Department. ABC's Matthew Larotonda reports that tables released by the White House yesterday indicate each state would receive penalties to mostly similar programs, including meal assistance for seniors and law enforcement grants. But the release is tailored to outline the individual impact to each state in the union. In a sample from military-heavy Virginia, "90,000 civilian Department of Defense employees would be furloughed, reducing gross pay by around $648.4 million in total." The document also says maintenance on 11 Navy vessels serviced in Old Dominion would be cancelled under the cuts. Three-hundred disadvantaged children in Colorado could lose access to child care. Meanwhile in Louisiana, "1,730 fewer children will receive vaccines for diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, whooping cough, influenza, and Hepatitis B due to reduced funding for vaccinations of about $118,000," it reads. http://abcn.ws/UZ8h78

After a series of dramatic confrontations with congressional Republicans, an American electorate that has little trust in Washington - and that's seeing a soaring stock market, plus a recovering housing market - looks to be tuning out the latest round of fiscal fighting, at least for now, writes ABC's Rick Klein. That's troublesome news for Obama, and not just for the recurring fights over spending and deficits. It's not a plot line, it's reality: The actress Ashley Judd is making moves to take on GOP Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, reports ABC's Shushannah Walshe. She hasn't announced yet, but her biggest supporter in Kentucky, Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth, told ABC News, "I would be surprised if she doesn't run at this point." Yarmuth, the only Kentucky Democrat in Congress, said he expects the decision to come soon. The race will be one of the most watched in the country, with outside money pouring into the state. The Electron Affinity screen provides the end user with a set of tools for working with electron affinity values which range from a low of 0 up to 349. The ranges are easily viewed by a convenient yellow and green display of colors.
Switch to the Orbital screen to discover comprehensive information about atoms and where their electrons can be found. The Orbital screen also provides comprehensive information on atomic orbitals to the properties of the majority of artificial isotopes when switching to the Isotopes screen. The Isotopes screen also allows the end user to easily access information on atomic composition and number of neutrons and protons. Additionally, end users can view specifics such as mass, binding energy, abundance, half-life, decay width, and decay type.
Windows 8 Periodic Table of Chemical Elements is an unpaid app that is offered with a user-friendly interface with bold color coding and a compact download size of 748KB. The app is offered in the English language and supports x86, x64, and ARM platforms.
