When I got married 21 years ago, I was not much of a diamond girl. At that point it was more of a frugal thing but the more I learned about the terrible human cost of the diamond trade, I preferred to stay away from those deceptively pretty objects. But if I were to be married today, you would find me swooning over Brilliant Earth's gorgeous, ethically produced engagement ring designs for sure!

Conflict Free Diamonds

Brilliant Earth diamonds are guaranteed to be conflict free in the most widely used definition of the term, which means that they do not come from sources that finance rebel forces against recognized national governments. Better yet, Brilliant Earth goes beyond conflict free by guaranteeing diamonds are free of all types of violence, workers are paid fair wages, child labor is absent and diamonds are mined ethically and with respect to the environment.

Additionally, the company has made a commitment to donate 5% of profits to communities that have been harmed by the diamond and fine jewelry industry. Brilliant Earth diamonds are sourced from mines in Canada, Namibia and Botswana, where they work to build infrastructure, provide decent jobs and protect wildlife and the natural surroundings.

While there is currently no Fair Trade diamond certification, Brilliant Earth is working with Fairtrade International to develop a standard for Fair Trade diamonds.

Recycled Metals

Metal mining is one of the most environmentally destructive types of mining around. Gold mining in particular releases toxic chemicals like cyanide and mercury into nearby water sources, while leaving landscapes ravaged due to wasteful open pit mining.

To avoid adding to those destructive practices, Brilliant Earth uses recycled gold, platinum and sterling silver in its jewelry designs. These reclaimed metals come from a variety of post-consumer uses including existing jewelry, industrial metals and electronics components.

Brilliant Earth also offers certified Fair Trade gold from the Choc? region of Colombia, South America.

Stunning Designs

One look at the Brilliant Earth website and it is clear that ethical sourcing brings no compromise in design or beauty. My eyes are especially drawn to the antique and vintage designs like this Delicate Antique Scroll:

and the simple elegance of this Three Stone Trellis ring:
