In some cases, credit counselors can negotiate with creditors to reduce outstanding balances, lower interest rates, and eliminate late fees and penalties.

Debt consolidation might be a viable option for debtors who own real estate with accrued equity. Homeowners take out a home equity loan using real estate as collateral. Funds are used to pay off high interest loans and credit card debts.

Interest rates assessed on real estate loans are significantly less than interest rates assessed for unsecured loans and credit card companies. Transferring debts to low-interest loans can save borrowers hundreds, if not thousands, in interest charges alone. However, using real estate to secure loans can be risky. If borrowers default on home equity loans they could potentially lose their property to foreclosure.

As the cost of living continues to rise, consumers must become proactive and pay attention to their spending habits. Several options are available for reducing monthly expenses. Common ways to reduce expenses include: enrolling in utility budget plans; reducing cell phone plans; bundling services such as cable, Internet, and home phone; and using grocery coupons and manufacturer rebates.

If filing personal bankruptcy is the only viable option, debtors should take time to become educated about the process and comparison shop bankruptcy lawyers. It is important to understand that bankruptcy remains on credit reports for 7 years and can prevent consumers from obtaining credit of any kind for two or more years.

Rep. Michele Bachmann insisted this week that the reason 40 million Americans ?choose? not to buy health care insurance has nothing to do with the cost.

Speaking to Fox News host Sean Hannity after attending Supreme Court arguments on Wednesday, the former Republican presidential candidate said that the Obama administration was wrong to suggest that insurance could be regulated because everyone would eventually be in the health care market.

?One argument that the government was trying to make is that somehow health care is uniquely different,? Bachmann explained. ?That government can regulate it because everyone participates. Health insurance is not uniquely different.?

?It?s still an opportunity that some people choose to engage in, but 40 million people do not.?

She continued: ?And the premise was made that people don?t buy insurance because they can?t afford it. That?s not true. There are people who just decide they want to roll the dice and take their chances that they won?t need insurance.?

Georgetown?University?s?Center?for?Children?and?Families found in 2009 that 66 percent thought Congress? top priority should be making health care more affordable. In all, 44 percent of those polled said they had cut back on household spending in the previous two years as a result of health care costs.

The Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured determined (PDF) in 2007 that 80 percent of those without health insurance were working families.

In 2010, Bachmann became the first lawmaker to introduce legislation to repeal President Barack Obama?s health care reform law.

As justices were hearing oral arguments on Monday, the Minnesota Republican stood on the steps in front of the Supreme Court and told several tea party groups that ?this is the day that we have been waiting for!?

?We have not waved the white flag of surrender on socialized medicine!? she exclaimed. ?This is one of the most important, consequential decisions that will ever come before this court. ? We believe that the Constitution means something!?

Canadiens fire general manager Pierre Gauthier

MONTREAL (AP) ? The Canadiens fired general manager Pierre Gauthier after a dismal season and split with Montreal great Bob Gainey on Thursday, insisting such play will not be tolerated by a franchise long part of hockey history.

"We need to remember that our fans want us to win, period," owner Geoff Molson said. "Our organizational culture is to support and adopt this passion for victory. Nothing else matters."

A string of moves by Gauthier failed to revive Montreal, which has been hit by injuries and is 29-34-14, last in the Eastern Conference.

"Everyone in this organization, including our players, expected better," said Molson, stressing the Canadiens' standard is to reach the top, not just make the playoffs.

Gainey, whom Gauthier succeeded as GM, is leaving his role as team adviser, Molson said at news conference. Gainey and Gauthier are longtime friends. Serge Sarvard, another Canadiens star, will advise Molson in the search for a new GM.

Molson praised his team's fans and spoke of a restoration to the day when the Canadiens ruled the NHL, pointing to a stockpile of draft picks and promises of acquiring new talent.

Gauthier fired assistant Perry Pearn and then coach Jacques Martin in mid-December, only to find himself in even more trouble for appointing unilingual Randy Cunneyworth as interim coach.

With protests from some Quebec nationalist groups and an ongoing controversy in the media, Gauthier apologized and promised that a French-speaking coach would be behind the bench next season.

In February, Molson resorted to Twitter to deny that Gauthier had been dismissed. Gauthier was hired as GM and executive vice president in February 2010, taking over from Gainey. He joined the organization in 2003 when he was appointed director of professional scouting.

'Game of Thrones' plays off real-life sword science

When the series opens its second series on Sunday, some of the swords you'll see are made of cheap resin, others are metal blades just meant to look good ? and a few of them have been custom-crafted using a technique reminiscent of the story's fictional, magic-laden Valyrian steel.

For Martin, swords are serious business.

"The one thing I can say is that he is very, very knowledgeable about history, including weaponry," said Chris Beasley, the proprietor of Valyrian Steel, the Michigan-based company that produces licensed replicas of "Game of Thrones" swords. "When designing the swords, and he is highly involved in the design process of our book replicas, he doesn't want something to look cool. He is more concerned with realism ? who made it, why, and how?"

For example, let's talk about Valyrian steel. In the "Game of Thrones" TV series and Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" book series, the Valyrian blades were created ages earlier by a vanished civilization, using a blend of alloys forged with magic spells. There's actually a real-life analog, minus the magic, known as Damascus steel. Damascus swords are famous for their resilience and the intricate, flowing patterns that are imprinted on the blades, but the secret of their forging has been lost for centuries.

A few years ago, researchers found that at the microscopic level, Damascus steel contains carbon nanotubes ? structures that seem like 21st-century technological magic dropped into the 17th century. The super-strong nanostructures are mixed in with softer metal in the sword. That solves the classic dilemma of sword-making: how to make a blade that is hard enough to do damage, yet supple enough not to break.

Modern-day Valyrian steel
Today, swordsmiths use a process known as "pattern welding" that produces results similar to the lost art of Damascus steel. Multiple layers of steel, with different amounts of carbon and other elements, are forge-welded together to create a blade that combines strength and suppleness. When all the layers of metal are flattened and folded together, over and over, it's like having two blades ? or, more accurately, 200 blades ? in one.

Some of the best-known Valyrian blades seen in the "Game of Thrones" TV series, such as the swords nicknamed Ice and Longclaw, were made using the pattern-welding technique.

"Ice was the main weapon to get right," Tommy Dunne, the weaponmaster for the series, said in a Westeros.org interview. "From the concept to the construction, it was about three weeks to make, as the blade was hand-forged by pattern welding, and the blade was drawn using machine hammers. But as with any good weapons, there's some other secrets that will remain secret!"

Beasley's business also sells some swords made with pattern-welded steel. "Those could technically be used, but we never recommend it," he told me. "Our swords are limited-edition collectibles, and no sword is impervious to damage. If used, they will get nicks, and chips, and scratches."

Beasley recalls that Valyrian Steel's Longclaw replica originally sold for $600, but after the swords were sold out, one customer reported receiving an offer of $3,000 to $4,000 for his sword. "I wouldn't recommend that anyone risk damage to something so valuable," Beasley told me.

Needle at work
If real fake Valyrian steel is too expensive for your taste, you can shell out $170 for Needle, the kid-sized sword that 9-year-old Arya Stark learns to uses with deadly effect in "Game of Thrones." Beasley said Martin had a hand in designing the replica.

"Reading the books, I and many others thought, 'OK, this is a small rapier,'" Beasley recalled. "George very quickly put that notion to rest. He said that Mikken, the Winterfell smith who made it, would never have seen a rapier in his life, so how could he make one? That is why the book version of needle is more or less a small, slim longsword, and not a rapier."

Martin was so pleased with the result that he had one of Valyrian Steel's Needles sent to the actress who plays Arya so she could practice with it. And she's not the only one.

"One customer did tell us that they use Needle in their offhand to increase strength and coordination," Beasley told me. "They keep it in their office, and when on the phone or otherwise occupied they just jab and thrust with their left hand." (Remind me not to burst into that office unexpectedly.)

New twists in an old trade
Some of the secrets from the golden age of swordsmithing may have been lost over the past few centuries, but technology is adding new twists to the trade. There's been a lot of research into the use of alloying elements such as carbon, manganese, chromium, nickel, titanium and molybdenum. Materials scientists also are developing metallic materials infused with carbon nanotubes, just like in the good old days of Damascus steel.

"In more modern times, steel can be precisely made, and the overall material creation process can be more scientific so that you can get precisely the steel with the hardness and flexibility you desire," Beasley said. "So materials science has probably made modern swords stronger than older ones, but construction methods have not changed ? though, obviously, power tools and other equipment have replaced arm power."

Businesses bought more machinery last month, lifting orders for long-lasting goods although not as much as economists had expected.

The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that new orders for durable goods rose 2.2 percent in February, after a drop of 3.6 percent in January. Economists had been expecting orders to rise by 3 percent.

"This number is another piece of the puzzle that seems to be coming together to form a picture that the economy is slowly improving, but it is definitely a halting recovery where we're not accelerating to any great degree," said Liam Dalton, president of Axiom Capital Management Inc.

Durable goods range from toasters to big-ticket items like aircraft which are meant to last three years and more.

Excluding transportation, orders climbed 1.6 percent. Economists had expected that reading to increase 1.7 percent. Machinery orders increased 5.7 percent.

Non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for future business investment, edged 1.2 percent higher, missing analysts' expectations of a 2.0 percent gain.

A 3.9 percent increase in bookings for transportation equipment - including a 6.0 percent increase in civilian aircraft orders - drove the overall increase in durable goods orders.

Boeing received 237 orders for aircraft during the month, according to the plane maker's website, up from 150 in January.

Orders for motor vehicles edged up 1.6 percent.

Shipments of non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, which go into the calculation of gross domestic product, rose 1.4 percent in February.

Shadow Wars bears no resemblance to the other games in its series. It?s a tactical grid based strategy game, in the spirit of Advance Wars and Civilization. With modest graphics, and a less than stellar narrative, the game focuses almost entirely on its gameplay, and that is where its true genius shines through. As a turn based strategy game, Shadow Wars is perhaps one of the best examples of its genre.

Whereas its poor commercial reception probably is disappointing, it means that the game is now available for incredibly cheap. Most places sell it for $19 new, and you owe it to yourself to pick the game up. Don?t expect it to impress you with its great use of the system?s 3D, or any of its features, for that matter. As a focused single player strategy game, Shadow Wars will endear itself to you purely on the strength of its game mechanics and design alone.

9. SAKURA SAMURAI

We complained, Nintendo listened.
