Obama: Time for excuses on immigration is over

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Declaring "the time for excuses is over," President Barack Obama is trumpeting the economic benefits of an immigration overhaul, arguing that a bipartisan bill picking up steam in the Senate would put the nation's loathed deficits and fragile entitlements on better footing.

A recent analysis from the Congressional Budget Office, lawmakers' nonpartisan scorekeeper, was Exhibit A in Obama's weekly radio and Internet address Saturday. The report shows deficits would fall nearly $1 trillion over two decades after the bill becomes law.

What's more, Obama said, the influx of immigrant-driven investment, technology and businesses would give the economy a 5 percent shot in the arm.

"This bipartisan, common-sense bill will help the middle class grow our economy and shrink our deficits, by making sure that every worker in America plays by the same set of rules and pays taxes like everyone else," he said.

Confidence that the overhaul could pass the Senate by impressive margins is growing, and leaders scheduled a test vote on the bill for Monday, with a final vote expected by the end of next week. Although the heart of the bill is a 13-year pathway to citizenship for millions living in the United States illegally, it was a military-style surge to U.S.-Mexican border security, added this week to placate wary Republicans, that was credited for giving the bill a much-needed boost.

Obama didn't specifically address the border amendment Saturday, but he did note that the bill "would continue to strengthen security at our borders." Despite concerns from some Democrats that the security provisions ? 20,000 new agents, 350 miles of new fencing, 18 new unmanned drones ? are overkill, Obama spokesman Jay Carney said Friday it would constitute a "breakthrough" that the White House applauded.

"The bill isn't perfect. It's a compromise," Obama said, reprising a line he's used throughout the process when Democrats have complained the bill has become too conservative. "But it's consistent with the principles that I and others have laid out."

In the Republican address, Rep. John Kline of Minnesota says Obama must show leadership to avoid an impending hike on student loan interest rates. He said it's fortunate that Obama and House Republicans agree on the issue and have both proposed plans that would tie interest rates to the market. He accused Senate Democrats of blocking each plan.

"If I didn't know any better, I would say they are content to let rates double," Kline said. "This eleventh-hour scrambling is a perfect demonstration of why we need to take the politics out of student loans once and for all."

Sleep deprivation in teens linked to poor dietary choices

June 20, 2013 ? Well-rested teenagers tend to make more healthful food choices than their sleep-deprived peers, according to a study led by Lauren Hale, PhD, Associate Professor of Preventive Medicine at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. The finding, presented at SLEEP 2013, the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, may be key to understanding the link between sleep and obesity.

"Not only do sleepy teens on average eat more food that's bad for them, they also eat less food that is good for them," said Dr. Hale, speaking about the study results. "While we already know that sleep duration is associated with a range of health consequences, this study speaks to some of the mechanisms, i.e., nutrition and decision making, through which health outcomes are affected."

The study, which was supported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, examined the association between sleep duration and food choices in a national representative sample of 13,284 teenagers in the second wave of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. The data were collected in 1996 when the interview subjects had a mean age of 16 years.

The authors found that those teens who reported sleeping fewer than seven hours per night -- 18 percent of respondents -- were more likely to consume fast food two or more times per week and less likely to eat healthful food such as fruits and vegetables. The results took into account factors such as age, gender, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, physical activity and family structure, and found that short sleep duration had an independent effect on both healthy and unhealthy food choices.

The respondents fell into one of three categories: short sleepers, who received fewer than seven hours per night; mid-range sleepers, who had seven to eight hours per night; and recommended sleepers, who received more than eight hours per night. The American Academy of Pediatrics currently recommends that adolescents get between nine and 10 hours of sleep per night.

"We are interested in the association between sleep duration and food choices in teenagers because adolescence is a critical developmental period between childhood and adulthood," said the first author of the study, Allison Kruger, MPH, a community health worker at Stony Brook University Hospital. "Teenagers have a fair amount of control over their food and sleep, and the habits they form in adolescence can strongly impact their habits as adults."

The research team -- which included co-authors Eric N. Reither, PhD, Utah State University; Patrick Krueger, PhD, University of Colorado at Denver; and Paul E. Peppard, PhD, University of Wisconsin-Madison -- concluded that addressing sleep deficiency may be a novel and effective way to improve obesity prevention and health promotion interventions.

Dr. Hale said that one of the next steps in the research will be to explore whether the association between sleep duration and food choices is causal.

"If we determine that there is a causal link between chronic sleep and poor dietary choices, then we need to start thinking about how to more actively incorporate sleep hygiene education into obesity prevention and health promotion interventions," she said.

Samsung Galaxy NX mirrorless camera: hands-on with an Android ILC (video)

Samsung Galaxy NX camera handson

After last year's Galaxy Camera, Samsung split in two directions. It went closer to the phone with the Galaxy S 4 Zoom, shrinking the form factor (and some of the specs) for something that closer approximates a pocket-friendly device, and it got serious about interchangeable-lens cameras. This is the Galaxy NX, an ILC with LTE connectivity that's capable of capturing at 8.6 fps and contains a hybrid autofocus system made by Samsung. In fact, the company says it's behind every part of this new device, from the quad-core 1.6GHz Pega-Q processor, to the 4.8-inch LCD screen, to even the shutter mechanism. With a "DSLR-class" 20.3-megapixel APS-C CMOS image sensor we've seen on other NX cameras, new DRIMe IV image processor and ISO settings from 100 to 25,600, Samsung appears to be making a serious pitch for photographers interested in more than just an Instagram hook-up. This mirrorless shooter will be compatible with the full gamut of NX lenses, currently totaling 13. We paired the Galaxy NX with its 18-55mm OIS kit lens and tested it out for a bit. Read up on our impressions after the break.

Update: Now with a dollop of video from the Premiere event in London.

(AP) ? Chinese police said Saturday that they had identified a suspect who might be responsible for the fire that gutted a commuter bus, killing 47 and injuring dozens more during rush hour in a port city in southeastern China.

Xiamen police did not provide further details in making the announcement online.

The fire ripped through the bus during the Friday evening commute while it traveled on an enclosed and elevated road in the city. A local fire official said emergency responders found bodies piled inside the charred, skeletal bus. The official Xinhua News Agency said Saturday that in addition to the 47 dead, 34 people remained hospitalized.

Investigators said early Saturday that the fire appeared to be intentionally set, and not an accident, Xinhua reported. Among the clues, Xinhua said, was that investigators found traces of gasoline on the wreckage, though the bus ran on diesel fuel and its oil tank and tires remained intact.

"It's a serious criminal case," the Ministry of Public Security, the national police agency, said in a statement on its website. Xiamen police declined further comment.

China has seen bombings and arson of buses and public buildings in recent years, sometimes by people trying to settle personal scores and also by people with overtly political grievances. In 2009, an unemployed man set fire to a packed bus in the central city of Chengdu, killing himself and 26 others.

Xiamen, a prosperous trading port known for centuries in the West as Amoy, was rattled by Friday's fire. The city immediately suspended service of the entire express bus system, known as Bus Rapid Transit, but operations resumed Saturday morning.

Witnesses quoted by Xiamen's official news site said they heard sounds of explosions after the fire had been burning for 10 minutes. Photos posed online showed heavy black smoke curling from the burning bus on the elevated road.

If looks could kill: Cersei's best 'Thrones' glares

TV

If looks could kill on "Game of Thrones," the death stare of Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) would have claimed more lives than the Red Wedding.

With Sunday's finale looming, we've tallied the victims of the queen regent's most withering sneers from season three. She may not always triumph in a war of words, nor can her evil eye surpass her son/nephew Joffrey's corporeal cruelty. But those cut down by her glaring daggers almost always tremble with fear.

1. Cersei instantly shut down future daughter-in-law Margaery Tyrell's sister act in "Second Sons": "If you ever call me 'sister' again, I'll have you strangled in your sleep." Oh, snap!

2. When Joffrey sides with his fianc?e -- for instance, their royal wave in "And Now His Watch Is Ended" -- the queen is not amused. Seriously. Look at that magnificent raised eyebrow.

3. Joffrey may be blind to Margaery's scheming -- including feeding their poor subjects -- but his mother's eyes are wide open. "I'm sure she knows what she's doing," praised the boy king, to which Cersei equivocated, "I'm sure she does."

4. Cersei's smug mug at Tyrion and Sansa's betrothal turned to horror when Tywin told her she was marrying Loras Tyrell. "You should be thanking the gods for this -- this is more than you deserve," daddy dearest snapped. But something tells us his daughter will devise another shortcut to widowhood before too many sleeps. (That eyebrow, again!)

5. Tiresome chitchat with her betrothed is out of the question: "Nobody cares what your father once told you," she wearily interrupted the hapless knight.

6. After barging into her younger brother's quarters in the third-season premiere, Cersei warned, "You're a clever man, but not half as clever as you think you are." (This round went to Tyrion, when he retorted, "Still makes me more clever than you." Ouch!)

How will Cersei react in the season finale when she hears news of the Red Wedding? Mayhaps it will look something like this?
