This may come as a shock to our Australian readers, who are so used to getting ripped off, but who are we to argue with the UK's Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development? In a study of smartphone contracts across 12 countries, it found that Australia consistently offered the best value, whereas the US and Canada penalized low-usage customers and offered just average value to the rest. Admittedly, the analysis had to set some severe parameters in order to benchmark across so many different markets and pricing models, including focusing on two handsets (the 16GB iPhone 4S and Galaxy S II) and a single month of data (February 2012, which was before the anti-subsidy trend began in the US). In any case, bear all that in mind as you read on for a summary of the report's main conclusions.

Microsoft goes Moneyball to pummel iPad yet again

I had always imagined that most baseball scouts were wizened veterans who had seen it all.

I had also imagined they would rather use a handkerchief than a tablet. Perhaps I've watched too many baseball movies.

Microsoft, on the other hand, would have you believe that modern scouts are all clutching their tablets to simultaneously talk to their bosses and view players' stats.

In its latest pitch to suggest that the iPad is the Houston Astros, Redmond offers two baseball scouts desperate for good pitching.

They are both in deep, tablet-based conversation with their general managers. Only one, though, has a Windows tablet. So only one can look up the pitcher's stats and stare at the boss's two disbelieving eyes.

More Technically Incorrect

You know how this one ends. The iPad strikes out.

I will leave others to decide just how realistic this scenario might be. I prefer to focus on the fascinating casting.

In the first ads of this series, Microsoft used Siri to insert its saber.

Now here are two men who represent each brand.

Microsoft man is well fed, tall, and is happy to wear some color in his outfit. He's middle-aged but still sharp.

Apple man, on the other hand, is something of a short schlub. He wears a dung-colored cap and a shirt that marks a fairly low-point even for, I imagine, Tommy Bahama.

Here is a man who, very probably, has little hair and a lot of problems.

What can Microsoft possibly be suggesting?

Personally, I would love to see more Windows 8 devices in the real world. The software certainly has its own distinct identity, which is more than I can say for some.

So I hope I don't deflate too many souls (and baseball fans), by offering the words of MLB.com's Bob Bowman, speaking earlier this year at AllThingsD.

Walt Mossberg asked Bowman to describe the split between iOS, Android, and "other."

"There's no other. It's iOS and Android. The 'other' is less than a percentage point," he said.

More tall, well fed scouts needed.

Dropbox announces the Dropbox Platform, syncing with third-party apps, Mailbox integration

At Dropbox's first DBX developer conference in San Francisco, CEO Drew Houston announced the Dropbox Platform, a suite of developer tools that make it easier for apps to access data across devices and operating systems. Built on top of the Sync API, Houston said the new Dropbox Platform is designed to "replace the hard drive" and that "sync is the new save." A key component of that is the Datastore API, which lets you sync data like contacts, to-do items and game state -- so you can save your Angry Birds level across your different gadgets for example.

Another platform element is the "Drop-in," which are a few lines of code that developers can use for cross-platform compatibility. Two such drop-ins are the "chooser," which gives apps instant access to files in Dropbox, and "Saver, which provides one-click saving to the cloud. These tools have been around already, but are just now available for native iOS and Androd apps. Some of the third-party companies that have signed onto the new Dropbox Platform include Shutterstock, PicMonkey, Asana, Yahoo! Mail, Animoto, 1Password, CloudOn, FedEx and Fargo.

As part of the announcement, Dropbox also touted a new feature for Mailbox -- that much-hyped app that Dropbox bought in March. It will now finally be able to send attachments directly from the app, which is something that the native iOS client can't do. All you'll have to do is tap the paper clip icon to open a list of Dropbox files, select your file and away you go. However, we've not yet heard just when this app update will be rolling out. We've included a screenshot of the Mailbox interface after the break.

Weston Parks and Rec summer camps still have openings | The ...

Even though summer has begun, it is not too late to sign up for some Weston Parks and Recreation summer camps. The following camps are still available for registration:

All American Sports Camp for children going into grades three and four. It is a two-week session beginning on July 15 and running until July 26. Drop-off is at 8:45 a.m. in front of the Weston High School gym and pick-up is at 3.

This is a reasonably competitive sports camp, geared to children who display a sincere interest in team sports and fun competition.

The fee is $475. To register, visit the Parks and Rec. offices at Jarvis House on the corner of Norfield and Weston roads.

Junior Eagle Day Camp is for children ages three to five. Although this camp began on June 26, there is still room available. It runs until July 26 from 9 to 12:30 every day.

Activities include American Red Cross swim lessons on Tuesdays and Thursday at the Weston Middle School pool. This camp also includes visits to Bisceglie Pond, arts and crafts and story time at the Weston Public Library.

The fee for two weeks is $450. Register in person at Jarvis House.

Head Coach Mike Hvizdo Weston Trojans Basketball Camp is offered for those in grades four through nine. It begins Aug. 19 and ends on Aug. 22, running 9 to 1 at Weston High School.

This camp gives players the basketball skills needed to become a better player in a fun environment. There will be guest speakers and contests that include prizes.

The Trifitness Triathlon Camp is a five-day program designed to introduce children ages seven to 14 to the sport of triathlon. Top triathletes and coaches will provide instruction on basic swimming, cycling and running techniques.

• July 29-Aug. 2 from 9 to 2 at the Weston Intermediate School.
